The Women of Troy will face Stephen F. Austin in the first round on Friday, Dec. 6
INDIANAPOLIS – USC was selected for an at-large berth into the 2019 NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship as announced by the selection committee on ESPNU on Sunday, Dec. 1. The six-time national champion Women of Troy will make their 29th straight appearance in the NCAA tournament (37th all-time).
The Trojans (17-13) will face Southland Conference champion Stephen F. Austin (31-1) in the first round at 5 p.m. CT (3 p.m. PT) on Friday, Dec. 6, at the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. In the other first-round match, top-seeded site host and Big 12 Conference champion Baylor (25-1) will meet Northeast Conference champion Sacred Heart (20-11) at 7 p.m. CT. Winners of each of the first-round matches will play in the second round on Saturday (Dec. 7) at 8 p.m. CT.
The Women of Troy have never previously faced Baylor, SFA, or Sacred Heart, but will make their second trip into the Lone Star State this season. USC opened the year there with matches at Texas and Texas State and is 30-5 all-time in the state of Texas (11-2 in postseason contests played there).
The Trojans hold a 126-40 (.759) all-time postseason record and are 80-33 (.708) in NCAA tournament matches. USC is the winner of six national championships including the first-ever NCAA title awarded in 1981. The Trojans won back-to-back NCAA crowns under Mick Haley in 2002 and 2003 and are the holders of three AIAW titles (1976, '77, '80) under the guidance of Chuck Erbe. USC has appeared in all but two of the NCAA's 39 annual championship tournaments (1986, 1990).
Since the NCAA expanded to a field of 64 teams in 1998, the Women of Troy have advanced to 12 regional championship matches, seven national semifinals (final four), and two national finals (both victories). Last year, the Women of Troy received the No. 11 seed and hosted matches at Galen Center where they advanced to the second round.
Under second-year head coach Brent Crouch, USC faced one of the nation's toughest schedules and finished the regular season with a 17-13 overall record. The Trojans went 11-9 in the Pac-12 and landed in sixth place. USC dealt with a plethora of injuries throughout the season but is led by its second all-time leader in career kills (1,996) in senior All-American OH Khalia Lanier (4.93 kps). USC also has one of the Pac-12's top setters in sophomore Raquel Lázaro who averages 10.67 assists per set and leads the league with 20 double-doubles. In the middle, senior MB Jasmine Gross is closing in on the program's single-season blocks record. She has 170 to date and ranks third in the Pac-12 at 1.39 blocks per set.
