USC Volleyball Drops Four-Set Decision at No. 22 Washington State

Outside hitter Khalia Lanier moved into third place in school history with her 1,807th career kill
PULLMAN, Wash. – The USC women's volleyball team (13-9, 7-5 Pac-12) fell in four sets (25-21, 22-25, 25-23, 27-25) to No. 22 Washington State (19-5, 8-4) at Bohler Gymnasium on Sunday, Nov. 3.

- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier had 23 kills (8e, 52att, .288), 14 digs, and a service ace; good for her fifth double-double of the season (39th career). Her 16th kill of the match was her 1,800th all-time and moved her ahead of Jennifer Kessy (1995-98) into third place for career kills in school history. As only the third USC player to record 1,800 kills in her career, Lanier's 1,807 kills now rank 25th among all-time marks by Pac-12 players. She also moved into second place in school history for career attacks (4,856) ahead of Alex Jupiter (2008-11). Lanier now has 2,017 career points; the third Trojan ever to break the 2,000 mark.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro put up 48 assists and 15 digs; with five blocks and a kill. It was Lázaro's league-leading 14th double-double of the season and the 26th of her career.
- Sr. libero Raegan LeGrand tied for match-high with 21 digs. Fr. Madison Horin matched her career high with six blocks.
- For the Cougars, four players recorded double-digit kills. Magda Jehlarova led with 13 and was followed by Penny Tusa (12), Pia Timmer (11), and Alexcis Lusby (10). Tusa (13) and Timmer (10) each had double-digit digs for double-doubles. Hannah Pukis had 45 assists and 12 digs for a double-double; Alexis Dirige had 21 digs to tie for match high honors.
- USC led by as many as five points in the first set, 16-11, but a 6-0 run by the Cougars netted WSU a 22-18 lead. The Trojans were outscored 14-5 to end the first set in Washington State's favor, 25-21. The Cougars caught fire down the stretch to finish with a .316 hitting rate to out-do the Women of Troy who hit .171.
- The score was tied 11 times in the second set, but Lanier poured in six kills to help the Trojans to a 25-22 win. USC also logged two aces and two blocks in the win to even the match at one set apiece.
- USC trailed by three, 16-13, but made a bid to come back and take the third when Lanier's sixth kill of the frame trimmed the lead to one at 24-23. Jehlarova turned the tables and secured the set for the Cougars with the last kill of the third.
- The Women of Troy led, 16-13, in the fourth but a game of runs pushed WSU ahead, 18-17. The Trojans took a 21-19 lead and threatened to push the match to a fifth set, but were caught at 23-all. The set went to extra points before Tusa collected her seventh kill of the set to finish off a 27-25 win for Washington State.
- The Women of Troy return to Galen Center to host Utah on Thursday (Nov. 7) at 7 p.m. and Colorado on Saturday (Nov. 9) at 7 p.m. PT. Both matches will be streamed live on Pac-12+.
- USC fell to 51-17 all-time against Washington State and to 20-14 in matches played in Pullman, Wash.
- The Cougars swept the regular-season series against USC for the first time since 1986 when the Trojans went 2-32 overall.
- The Women of Troy fell to 40-31 all-time in the state of Washington.
- WSU defeated USC in fewer than five sets for the first time since 2009 (3-0 on Oct. 16 in Pullman).
- The Trojans suffered their first non-five-set loss in Pac-12 play this season. Each of USC's other four losses went five sets.
