Freshman outside hitter Kalen Owes registered a career-high 19 kills in a loss to the Cardinal
LOS ANGELES – The USC women's volleyball team (12-8, 6-4 Pac-12) had a three-match winning streak snapped in a five-set loss (23-25, 26-28, 25-19, 25-14, 15-11) to second-ranked Stanford (14-4, 8-2) at Galen Center on Sunday, Oct. 27.

- Fr. OH Kalen Owes logged a career-high 19 kills (6e, 61att, .213) to go with seven digs and a career-best five blocks.
- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier had 20 kills (10e, 65att, .154) with 12 digs and a service ace. It was the 16th time that she reached double-digit kills in as many matches and her fifth 20-plus kill match and third double-double of the season (37 career).
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross added 16.5 points with 10 kills (2e, 29att, .276) and had six blocks, six digs, and three aces.
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro put up 48 assists with 16 digs for her 13th double-double of the season (25th of her career) and had three blocks and a service ace.
- Defensively, Sr. libero Raegan LeGrand had 15 digs and added a pairs of service aces. Sr. defender Jenna Adams had eight.
- For the Cardinal, Kendall Kipp had 23 kills (5e, 45att, .400). Audrianna Fitzmorris added 14 kills (3e, 34att, .324) and Madeleine Gates picked up 13 kills (6e, 29att, .241). Holly Campbell had eight blocks. Jenna Gray had a double-double with 58 assists and 15 digs. Morgan Hentz led all players with 27 digs.
- Stanford out-blocked (12-10), out-hit (.292 to .149) and out-scored (90-74) the Women of Troy and gained steam in the back three to spoil the Trojans' bid at an upset victory.
- USC won the first set despite being out hit .270 to .196 with 15 kills to each side. The Trojans used several small bursts to climb out of a six-point hole and led by as many as three in a 25-23 win. USC scored on 19 kills (.240) and out-dug the Cardinal, 22-20, in the second set to claim a 28-26 win. Owes had nine of her kills in the second frame alone.
- Tied at seven-all, the Cardinal steadied its game to get in front by five at 17-12, but USC closed the gap to one point at 19-18 before Stanford closed the books on the third set with a 6-1 run for a 25-19 win. This time, the Cardinal had a 21-11 edge in the digging game. Stanford went on a 9-1 run to blow open the fourth set and finished off a 25-14 win to force the fifth.
- USC held a brief 4-2 lead in the fourth but the Cardinal forced the side change with an 8-7 lead. Stanford got six kills from Kipp and turned a slim 10-9 lead into a 15-11 win to end the match.
- The Women of Troy open November and the back half of the Pac-12 schedule with a trip to the Pacific Northwest. USC meets Washington on Friday (Nov. 1) at 8 p.m. PT in Seattle, Wash., and then heads to Pullman for a match-up with Washington State on Sunday (Nov. 3) at noon. Both matches will be shown live on Pac-12 Networks.
- USC fell to 25-66-1 all-time against Stanford and has lost seven straight to the Cardinal. It was, however, the Trojans' first set win over Stanford since Oct. 15, 2017; and the first 2-0 lead over the Cardinal since a 3-0 sweep victory on Oct. 4, 2013. The Trojans also fall to 1-9 in their last 10 meetings with the Cardinal.
- The Women of Troy dropped to 6-2 at home this season and to 167-39 all-time at Galen Center.
- Each of USC's last five losses came in five-set matches; and all four of the Trojans' Pac-12 losses were in five-setters.
- USC falls to 137-88 all-time in five-set matches and to 55-30 in home five-setters. Against Stanford, the Trojans go to 5-9 in five-set contests (1-4 when played at home).
