Trojans Fall in Five-Set Road Loss to No. 18 Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – USC women's volleyball (9-7, 3-3 Pac-12) won the first two sets but lost in five (20-25, 19-25, 25-17, 25-19, 15-11) to No. 18 Utah (13-4, 5-1) at the Jon M. Huntsman Center on Sunday, Oct. 13.

- Sr. OH Khalia Lanier tallied a season-high 28.0 points and posted a season-best 26 kills (9e, 54att) to hit .315; to go with seven digs, and two service aces.
- Jr. OH Brooke Botkin scored 14 kills (6e, 50att, .160) with eight digs and two blocks.
- Sr. MB Jasmine Gross had eight kills (2e, 19att) and hit .316 to go with five blocks (one solo).
- So. setter Raquel Lázaro handed out 55 assists and registered her 10th double-double of the season (22nd career) with 10 digs. Lázaro also had three service aces, two blocks, and two kills.
- Sr. libero Raegan LeGrand led the Trojans with 20 digs. Fr. OH Kalen Owes had 11 digs and scored five kills.
- For the Utes, four players reached double-digit kills led by Kenzie Koerber, who had 18. Dani Drews (17), Berkeley Oblad (12), and Zoe Weatherington (10) also powered the Utah offense. Brianna Doehrmann led all players with 23 digs.
- The Trojans trailed in each of the first two sets, but used big runs to break away. USC racked up five blocks in the first set and hit .280 to get a 25-20 win. In the second, the Trojans served three aces and held the Utes to a .051 hitting percentage for the 25-19 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
- Utah got out to an early lead in the third and never let the Trojans back into the game en route to a 25-17 win. USC lost the set despite posting 15 kills on .256 hitting. The Utes had 19 kills and a .462 hitting percentage. After starting out close, the Utes rolled away to lead by as many as eight points in the fourth. Both teams had 17 kills but Utah out-hit USC, .486 to .275.
- Utah scored the first five points in the fifth set, but the Trojans came back to tie the score at eight-all. The Utes then used a 6-2 run to close out the 15-11 win and secured the five-set victory.
- The Trojans stay on the road for two more matches and visit Oregon State on Friday (Oct. 18) for a match at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore., at 7 p.m. USC then faces Oregon at Matthew Knight Arena for a noon match on Sunday (Oct. 20) in Eugene, Ore. Both matches will be shown live on the Pac-12 Networks.
- USC fell to 18-5 all-time against Utah and dropped two straight against the Utes for the first time in the series history.
- The Trojans dropped to 29-4 all-time in the state of Utah (9-2 against the Utes).
- The Women of Troy fell to 1-4 in five-set matches this season (137-87 all-time). It was also USC's first five-set loss in the state of Utah (3-1 all-time). Separately, the Trojans and the Utes played five sets for the third time in the last six meetings.
- USC lost a match in which it won the first two sets for the first time since Dec. 14, 2013 (vs. Washington, NCAA regional).
- For the second match in a row, USC had only 10 players available for the match.
