DAVIS, Calif. – The No. 12 USC women's soccer team got its first taste of action this weekend, beating UC Davis 4-0 in an exhibition match on Saturday afternoon in Davis.
Four different Trojans found the back of the net in the tune-up contest as USC gets ready for its regular-season opener on Thursday at UC Irvine.
Senior forward Leah Pruitt got things going for the Trojans in the 17th minute, picking up a short pass from Natalie Jacobs in the box and slotting it inside the left post past a diving keeper. Freshman Madeline Vergura would add to the lead in the 41st, finishing a run up the left side with a shot inside the right post.
Jacobs would give USC a commanding 3-0 lead in the 62nd minute, this time scoring herself after an assist from Hailey Hite. A third Trojan newcomer capped the scoring as Megan McCashland scored on a corner from Arlie Jones to make it 4-0 in the 72nd minute. Jacobs, Vergura and McCashland were all playing their first game in a USC uniform on Saturday.
The Trojans dominated possession in the game, outshooting UC Davis 18-4 and putting 10 shots on goal to just one for the home team. Three USC keepers helped secure the shutout for the Trojans, with Kaylie Collins getting the start and splitting time with Anna Smith and Mackenna Carmichael. Carmichael was the only keeper forced to make a save for the Trojans.
USC opens on the road at UC Irvine on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then will host its home opener on Aug. 24 at 3 p.m. when Cal Poly comes to town. The Trojans were ranked No. 12 nationally in the recent preseason coaches poll and were picked to finish third in the Pac-12.
