Â
The Trojans, hosting the Pac-12 Championships for the first time since 2006 and aiming for their 20th conference title in program history, combined for a 23-under 687 (347-340) and hold a five-stroke lead over No. 12 Stanford, which finished 18-under 692. Â
This year's field features five of the nation's top 25 teams and the top-three golfers in the nation, including NCAA No. 2 Justin Suh. Suh, who was grouped with current No. 1 Collin Morikawa of California to begin the morning, finished tied for first place individually after carding a 68 in the first round and an impressive 64 in the second, highlighted by eight birdies. Suh, already with four wins this season, is looking to become the 22nd Trojan individual champion and USC's first since Martin Trainer won the solo title in 2011.
Â
After trailing for most of the first round, the Trojans caught fire in their second round of action with Suh and freshman Kaito Onishi sinking eight birdies apiece, while Slater recorded six birdies and sophomores Cheng Jin and Kyle Suppa each had three. In all, four Trojans finished under par.
Â
Slater posted the two best consecutive rounds of the season with back-to-back 69s for a 4-under 138, tying for eighth overall individually. The sophomore's best finish this season was a tie for 42nd at the Trinity Forest Invitational back in September.Â
Â
Onishi (75-64) and Jin (68-71) both finished the day tied for 14th at 2-under 139, while freshman Issei Tanabe and Suppa carded a 1-over 143 (70-73) and 2-over 144 (72-72), respectively. Onishi and his eight second-round birdies helped him to one off his USC best.
