Road Sweep Complete: No. 2 USC Stays Perfect In MPSF Play With 12-1 Win Over SJSU
April 14, 2018 | Women's Water Polo, Features
Trojans follow a win over No. 1 Stanford with another road victory in beating San José State.
SARATOGA, CALIF. — The No. 2 USC women's water polo team brings home a 10-game win streak in picking up a pair of MPSF victories on the road. After avenging its only loss of the year with a win at Stanford, the Trojans took out No. 21 San José State today with a 12-1 win in Saratoga, Calif. Senior Hayley McKelvey's 100th career goal lit the fuse on this one, as the Trojans shut out the Spartans through the first three periods of play en route to the victory. USC goes to 20-1 overall and 4-0 in MPSF play with the win.
USC's domination began with a rocket from Hayley McKelvey, who's opening goal also tallied the senior's 100th career goal as a Trojan. Freshman Paige Hauschild struck next, and then she'd find Maud Megens at set for a backhand blast that made it 3-0 USC. That would hold to the end of the frame, and USC got right back to action in the next stretch. McKelvey started things off again; then, it was sophomore Elise Stein who sliced in the score, followed by a tally from senior captain Brianna Daboub, and USC was up 6-0 by halftime.
In the third, USC goalie Victória Chamorro and the Trojan defense continued to deny the Spartans. Meanwhile, Kaylee Brownsberger got in on the scoring before Daboub added her second, and USC gripped an 8-0 advantage after three periods of play. San José State would break its silence with a power play goal to open the fourth, but USC had a strong response. Freshmen Verica Bakoc and Hauschild went back-to-back before seniors Annika Jensen and Daboub answered to carry USC ahead 12-1 — a margin that would hold to the final buzzer as USC wrapped up its 10th consecutive victory.
USC now returns home to host its final regular-season game next weekend. After a Senior Day celebration to honor the Trojans' graduating seniors — Victória Chamorro, Brianna Daboub, Nicola Gonzales, Annika Jensen, Hayley McKelvey, Emma Cornwell, Kaitlin Leimbach and Caitlin Stuewe — the Trojans will take on rival UCLA in a televised 7 p.m. clash on Saturday (April 21) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
