Tina Thompson Selected As Finalist for Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame
February 18, 2018 | Women's Basketball, Features
Trojan great is in line to become the fifth USC representative in the prestigious Hall of Fame.
Trojan great Tina Thompson was named on Feb. 17 as one of the nine finalists to be considered for election into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Thompson was also recently elected to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame on Feb. 12. If inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, Thompson would become the fifth Trojan and the fourth female Trojan to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
Thompson dominated college basketball during her All-American career at USC from 1993-1997. She still looms as USC's No. 5 all-time scorer and rebounder and was an all-conference first-teamer for three seasons with the Trojans. Thompson's exceptional college career led her to become the first-ever WNBA draftee in the 1997 inaugural WNBA Draft. After being drafted by the Houston Comets, Thompson led the Comets to four straight WNBA championships from 1997-2000 alongside her Trojan teammate Cynthia Cooper-Dyke. Thompson was also a nine-time WNBA All-Star (1999-2003, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2013) and earned All-WNBA First Team honors three times (197, 1998, 2004).
Thompson continued to find success on the international stage with Team USA, winning two gold medals in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. She also played in professional leagues overseas including South Korea, Russia and Romania. Thompson won a Russian National League Championship and EuroLeague Championship in 2007, as well as a Romanian National League Championship in 2010.
Thompson is included in an impressive list of Basketball Hall of Fame 2018 finalists, including Ray Allen (player), Grant Hill (player), Jason Kidd (player), Steven Nash (player), Katie Smith (player), Charles "Lefty" Driesell (coach), and Kim Mulkey (coach). There are four Trojans already included in the Basketball Hall of Fame — fellow Women of Troy Lisa Leslie (2015) and Cynthia Cooper-Dyke (2010) and Cheryl Miller (1995) and USC men's coach George Raveling (2015).
The Hall of Fame Class of 2018 will be announced on Saturday, March 31 prior to the NCAA Men's Final Four. A finalist needs 18 of 24 votes from the Honors Committee for election into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. The Class of 2018 will be enshrined in Springfield, Massachusetts during festivities from September 6-8, 2018.
