Next week, Trojans host Pepperdine and UCLA in final regular season home matches of 2018.
Karl Apfelbach had 13 kills and 2 aces and Joel Schneidmiller added 10 kills to help the No. 4-ranked UC Irvine men's volleyball team sweep USC, 25-18, 28-26, 25-13, in a non-conference match on Saturday (March 24) at USC's Galen Center.
UC Irvine improved to 17-5 overall, while USC dropped to 6-16 in 2018. The teams formerly were foes in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation before the Anteaters and five other MPSF schools moved to the Big West this season.
Before the match, members of USC's 1980 NCAA championship team were saluted on the court, including Dusty Dvorak, Pat Powers and Tim Hovland.
Ryan Moss led USC with 9 kills, while Jack Wyett added 8 kills and Sam Lewis had 4 blocks.
David Parker had 11 digs for UCI.
UC Irvine outhit the Trojans, .405 to .117, and the Anteaters had more blocks (7.5 to 5.0), digs (28 to 20) and aces (4 to 1).
UCI jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the first set and steadily pulled away while hitting .542. A 5-0 run gave USC a 16-13 lead in the second set, but the Anteaters tied it at 19-19 and then scored the set's final 3 points. UCI ran off 4 consecutive points in the final set to go up 11-6 and continued to build on the lead while hitting .391.
Next week, USC remains at home for its final 2 regular-season home matches, first hosting No. 5 Pepperdine on March 29 and then No. 3 UCLA on March 31 for a pair of 7 p.m. PT MPSF contests in the Galen Center. The UCLA match will be shown live on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Los Angeles.
