Sophomore blazes to second-fastest mark of all-time (49.80).
USC sophomore Louise Hansson won USC's first-ever NCAA title in the 100-yard butterfly with the second-fastest time in history, 49.80, and helped the Trojans to the 200y medley relay A final as well on the third night of the NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Ohio State's McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on Friday (March 16).
The Trojans finished the third day of the championships in 11th place with 83 points.
Hansson became the third woman ever to break the 50-second barrier in prelims, grabbing the top seed in finals with a morning 49.90.
A 2016 Swedish Olympian and two-time Pac-12 champion who was third in the NCAA race last year, Hansson led wire-to-wire in the final, touching 0.54 ahead of Tennessee's second-place finisher, Erika Brown, one of the two other women to go under 50 seconds. The other is Louisville's Kelsi Worrell, who holds the record in 49.43.
Hansson's win is USC's first NCAA title since winning the 400y free relay in 2016, first individual title since Haley Ishimatsu won the platform in 2014, and first individual swim win since Olympian Haley Anderson in 2013.
"Louise's win tonight was the culmination of a lot of determined hard work this season," USC Coach Dave Salo said. "I'm proud of another Trojan individual championship. She is an important leader for the team and she sparked everyone's strong efforts today."
Hannson then joined senior Hannah Weiss, junior Riley Scott and freshman Marta Ciesla in USC's first A final relay of the meet, finishing seventh in the 200y medley relay in 1:36.44. The quartet, which earns All-American honors for the top 8 finish, posted a 1:36.20 in prelims to reach the finals. Hansson and Scott were also on the All-American relay last year.
Scott earlier won the consolation final of the 100y breast for a career-best ninth-place overall finish, hitting the wall first in 59.23. Scott, who scored in the event for the third year in a row, went 59.41 to finish 10th in prelims.
Among USC's other finishers in prelims, freshman Maggie Aroesty was 19th in the 100y breast (59.97), junior Maddie Wright was 23rd in the 100y fly (season-best 52.37), senior Hannah Weiss was 24th in the 100y back (52.67), sophomore Catherine Sanchez was 37th in the 100y fly (53.13), sophomore Becca Mann was 39th in the 400y IM (4:16.71), freshman Caitlin Tycz was 40th in the 100y fly (53.28) and sophomore Tatum Wade was 47th in the 200y free (1:47.81).
The meet concludes Saturday with prelims at 7am PT and finals at 3 pm.
