No. 15 USC Angles Past No. 23 Arizona in Four-Set Win

Sophomore outside hitter Brooke Botkin led the Women of Troy with 19 kills and 21.5 points.
LOS ANGELES – The 15th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (14-5, 6-2 Pac-12) swept their home weekend with a 3-1 win (25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 25-16) over No. 23 Arizona (14-6, 3-5) at Galen Center on Sunday, Oct. 14.

- So. OH Brooke Botkin led the Women of Troy with 21.5 points scored on 19 kills (3e, 37att) with a career-high .432 hitting percentage. She also recorded five digs, two blocks (one solo), and a service ace.
- Fr. setter Raquel Lázaro dished out 47 assists to go with six digs, four blocks, two service aces, and two kills.
- Jr. OPP Emily Baptista posted 15 kills (2e, 28att) with a .464 hitting percentage and picked up four blocks.
- Jr. OH Khalia Lanier added 11 kills (5e, .182) on 33 swings and had three digs and a pair of service aces.
- Sr. MB Madison Murtagh led the Trojans with six blocks and added a pair of kills. Sr. libero Victoria Garrick had a match-high 22 digs and three assists. Jr. MB Jasmine Gross had three blocks and recorded a service ace to go with seven kills (.455).
- For the Wildcats, Katie Smoot led with 13 kills. Candice Denny and Paige Whipple each picked up 11 kills apiece. Julia Patterson put up 43 assists and had nine digs. Arizona was without Pac-12 kills leader Kendra Dahlke.
- USC hit .500 in the first set and got 16 kills on 30 swings (2e). Lázaro dished out 15 assists, but it was Arizona's play down the stretch that cemented a 25-18 win for the Trojans. The Wildcats' hot hitting dissipated as Arizona finished at .171 (13k, 7e, 35att). Baptista powered the Trojan offense with seven kills on 11 swings with no errors (.636).
- The score was tied 11 times in the second set, but Arizona went in front, 18-16, and built a five-point lead at 24-19. The Trojans saved three set points and closed the gap to 24-22, but the Wildcats finished off the 25-22 win, despite six kills and .500 hitting by Botkin and three Trojan blocks.
- USC claimed a 15-10 lead on a block by Baptista and Gross, and then was never threatened by the Wildcats en route to a 25-17 win in the third set. Baptista and Lanier each had three kills apiece.
- The fourth frame was all business for the Women of Troy, who hit .727 and collected 16 kills on 22 attacks without an error. USC had an 81-percent sideout rate and got six kills from Botkin and four more from Lanier in a 25-16 close-out win.
- USC will play its third and fourth matches in a span of seven days when it travels to the Pacific Northwest contests at No. 18 Washington (13-5, 5-3 Pac-12) on Wednesday (Oct. 17) in Seattle; and at No. 21 Washington State (13-5, 4-4) on Friday (Oct. 19) in Pullman, Wash. The matches will each be shown live on Pac-12 Networks.
- USC improves to 64-22 all-time against Arizona and won its second straight match since previously losing three in a row.
- The Trojans moved to 7-1 at Galen Center this season and to 158-33 all-time in the arena.
- Arizona was the 11th ranked opponent the Trojans have faced in 2018. USC improved to 7-4 against ranked foes.
