September 25, 2017 | Women's Volleyball, Features
The two Women of Troy were integral pieces to USC’s 2-0 start in Pac-12 play this week
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball senior opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week and junior libero Victoria Garrick (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Preparatory) received Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week of Sept. 18-24, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Sept. 25.
Both Abercrombie and Garrick receive their first-career weekly conference honors and represent USC's 70th and 71st all-time awards. UCLA's Mac May was chosen for the Freshman of the Week award for the second time this season. Trojans also own 14 Freshman of the Week awards, which are not included in the 71 all-time awards total.
Abercrombie receives USC's second offensive award this season. Sophomore outside hitter Khalia Lanier was chosen following the opening weekend (Aug. 28). Garrick brings home the first defensive award for the program since libero Taylor Whittingham was chosen for the honor on Oct. 3, 2016.
As a three-rotation player, Abercrombie was phenomenal as she posted back-to-back matches with career highs of 18 kills (36 total). She also logged new career marks with 40 and 43 attacks in USC's wins over UCLA and Oregon State. Abercrombie averaged 4.00 kills per set with just five errors on 83 swings for a .373 hitting percentage. She put up 37 points for a 4.11 points-per-set average. In addition to her impressive numbers, Abercrombie was the catalyst for the Women of Troy at critical moments in each of the Trojans' two victories this week. She sparked USC to its runs in the fourth set against UCLA and in a pivotal third set against the Beavers.
Garrick averaged 4.78 digs per set and completed the week with 43 total digs in nine sets of action. She also put up 15 assists (1.67 aps) and had four service aces. Against the 11th-ranked Bruins on the road, Garrick totaled 18 digs and had a career-high 10 assists for her first-career double-double; the first double-double by a USC libero since three-time All-American Natalie Hagglund did so on Sept. 2, 2012. Garrick then put up 25 digs against the Beavers to come just two shy of her career high. She served three service aces against Oregon State to match her career high.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the seventh year (since 2011) that the Pac-12 has announced separate offensive, defensive, and freshman honorees. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC has had 15 offensive awards, 10 defensive awards, and 14 freshman honors.
This week, the 20th-ranked Trojans host Washington State (12-2, 1-1 Pac-12) and No. 6 Washington (12-1, 2-0) for matches at Galen Center this weekend. The Cougars visit on Saturday (Sept. 30); the Huskies on Sunday (Oct. 1). Both matches are set for 1 p.m. PT first serves. USC-UW will be shown live on Pac-12 Washington while USC-WSU will be streamed live on the Pac-12.com/now page.
