September 01, 2017 | Women's Cross Country, Features
Amber Gore finished second individually at the Pepperdine Invitational (4K) in Malibu, Calif. as USC took fourth overall as a team in the season opener today (Sept. 1). The meet was technically scored in a head-to-head format, so the Trojans defeated CSU Bakersfield (22-35) and CSUN (25-30), while falling to UC Irvine (33-22), host Pepperdine (31-24) and the winner Long Beach State (36-19).
"I was really pleased with Amber Gore. I think with just a little more rest or even if she was wearing spikes, I think she could have come away with the win," said USC's first-year cross country coach Patrick Henner. "Over the next 4-6 weeks we have to work on aerobic fitness and we are going to get a lot better."
The junior Gore placed second with a time of 14:48.61 which was nearly 38 seconds faster than she ran over the same course in placing fourth at the 2016 Pepperdine Invitational. Gore steadily moved up throughout the race and put a great deal of pressure on the individual winner Mikayla Florez of Long Beach State (14:41.96) over the final third of the race.
USC's second finisher was senior Madison Ricks who had a time of 15:53.05 to finish 16th. She was the 2016 Pepperdine Invitational winner with a time of 15:14.37. Next in scoring for USC was junior Lauren Maurer who finished 18th with a time of 15:59.84.
USC's other three scorer were all newcomers as freshman Julia Bounds was 24th with a time of 16:27.74, freshman Sydney Tullai was 27th with a time of 16:43.00 and junior transfer Angel Vallier was 32nd with a time of 16:54.52.
USC also had several 800m runners which competed for training and racing experience, but they were only schedule to run roughly a little more than half of the race. Those runners today were juniors Rachel Glynn and Mikaela Smith and freshmen Jennifer Daly and Mackenzie Ellison.
Not competing today for USC were sophomores Chloe Berry and Kamryn Weber.
USC will next be in action at the UC Riverside Invitational on Sept. 16.
