Khalia Lanier Named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week
August 28, 2017 | Women's Volleyball, Features
The second-year outside hitter scored 4.36 kills per set with a .400 hitting percentage in three wins over the weekend
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball sophomore outside hitter Khalia Lanier was selected as the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for the opening week of Aug. 21-27, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Aug. 28. It is Lanier's second-career weekly honor--her first as the league's offensive selection. The award is the 69th all-time honor for the Trojans' program, which does not include 14 Freshman of the Week selections.
UCLA's Zana Muno was named the Defensive Player of the Week and Mac May was chosen as the Freshman of the Week.
Lanier becomes USC's first offensive award winner since Nov. 9, 2015, when three-time All-American OH Samantha Bricio received her record sixth honor of that season. In all, Bricio finished her career with nine weekly awards and tied for second in conference history. Lanier is also the first non-freshman selection for the Women of Troy since libero Taylor Whittingham was chosen for the defensive award on Oct. 3, 2016.
Over the season's opening weekend, Lanier produced 48 kills (4.36 kps) and a .400 hitting percentage in just 11 sets of action (out of 12). She also led the Trojans with four service aces, and was second on the team with 27 digs (2.45 dps). Lanier added a pair of solo blocks and had four total blocks for 55.0 points in the three matches. Lanier's fast start helped the Women of Troy go 3-0 with four-set wins against Loyola Marymount, No. 16-ranked Michigan, and UAlbany.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the seventh year (since 2011) that the Pac-12 has announced separate offensive, defensive, and freshman honorees. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC has had 14 offensive awards, nine defensive awards, and 14 freshman honors.
This week, the 18th-ranked Trojans hit the road for the first of three straight weekends at road tournaments. They will face No. 7 Creighton, No. 13 Kentucky, and Northern Iowa at the Bluejay Invitational, presented by First National Bank, hosted by Creighton. Matches take place at D.J. Sokol Arena in Omaha, Neb., on Sept. 1-2, with live stats and video available for each one. Links and more information can be found at the USCTrojans.com women's volleyball home page and schedule.
