Abercrombie Chosen for Second Consecutive Pac-12 Player of the Week Honor
October 02, 2017 | Women's Volleyball, Features
USC senior opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie helped the Women of Troy to a pair of wins over WSU and No. 6 UW this week
SAN FRANCISCO – USC women's volleyball senior opposite hitter Brittany Abercrombie (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon HS) was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 25-Oct. 1, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Oct. 2. It is the second consecutive week that Abercrombie receives the award and represents USC's 72nd all-time weekly award.
Colorado's Naghede Abu was named the Defensive Player of the Week and the Buffaloes' Brynna Deluzio receives the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honor.
Abercrombie's honor is USC's third offensive award this season. Sophomore outside hitter Khalia Lanier was chosen following the opening weekend (Aug. 28). Junior libero Victoria Garrick received the defensive award on Sept. 25.
Abercrombie is the first Pac-12 player to receive awards in consecutive weeks since Stanford's Audriana Fitzmorris was chosen for the defensive award on Aug. 29 and then for the offensive award on Sept. 5 of 2016. Abercrombie is the first Trojan to receive back-to-back awards since three-time All-American Samantha Bricio was chosen for three straight weeks to start 2015.
As a three-rotation player, Abercrombie was phenomenal as she posted back-to-back matches with 13 kills apiece to help the Women of Troy defeat Washington State in four sets and earn a 3-0 upset of sixth-ranked Washington. Against the Cougars, Abercrombie had 13 kills on 34 swings and added three blocks and three digs. She had 13 more kills against the Huskies and posted a .310 hitting percentage with a season-high eight digs.
Weekly awards have been selected every week of the season since the Conference began sponsoring women's volleyball in 1986. It is the seventh year (since 2011) that the Pac-12 has announced separate offensive, defensive, and freshman honorees. Freshman of the week honors are not included in the all-time totals for each institution. Since 2011, USC has had 16 offensive awards, 10 defensive awards, and 14 freshman honors.
This week, the Trojans head to the desert for their first out-of-state Pac-12 matches and face Arizona on Friday (Oct. 6) in Tucson, Ariz., before taking on Arizona State on Saturday (Oct. 7). Both matches are set for 6 p.m. PT starts. USC-Arizona will be shown live on Pac-12 Los Angeles and Pac-12 Arizona. The Trojans and the Sun Devils will be shown on the Pac-12+ live stream platform.
