LOS ANGELES - Designated hitter Levi Hyams was 3-for-4 Saturday as the Georgia Bulldogs beat the USC Trojans, 5-3, in day two action of the 2011 Dodgertown Classic, played at Dedeaux Field. Michael Palazzone allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings for Georgia (7-8) while striking out eight Trojans and allowed just one walk.
After allowing a leadoff single in the second, Palazzone got a double play to end the inning and retired 10 of the next 11 batters he faced.
Ricky Oropesa went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI for USC (4-10). Austin Wood (2-1) took the loss for the Trojans by allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits in five innings. The Trojans tied a season high with three errors in the game for Wood, who walked three, struck out four and hit three batters. Chris Mezger threw 2 1/3 scoreless innings in relief for the Trojans.
Wood hit Georgia leadoff hitter Curt Powell with a pitch in the first as Powell later moved to third on a single by Hyams. Chase Davidson then hit a chopper that USC shortstop James Roberts mishandled as Powell scored the first run. Oropesa singled home Kevin Roundtree in the bottom half to tie it at 1-1. Alex Sherrod then lined a double to right center to plate Oropesa and Matt Foat singled to center to make it a 3-1 USC lead.
Hyams laid down a bunt in the third for the Bulldogs as Roundtree's throw was wild, allowing Hyams to reach second. Zach Cone sacrificed Hyams to third and Davidson lifted a sacrifice fly to left to cut the deficit to one. Oropesa's fielding error in the fourth with one out allowed Brett DeLoach to get on base, followed by Joey Delmonico's single. Wood then walked Powell and with the bases loaded, walked Hyams to force in the tying run.
In the top of the fifth, Wood hit another batter as Jonathan Hester scored the go-ahead run after DeLoach doubled down the left field line. Davidson's single scored Peter Verdin in the sixth for the 5-3 lead.
Oropesa hit a one-out double to left center in the eighth and tried to stretch it to a triple, but was thrown out at third on the cutoff throw. After Blake Dieterich retired the first two batters he faced, he walked pinch-hitter Mike Greco and would give way to Tyler Maloof. Maloof walked pinch-hitter Alex Glenn to put runners at first and second. With Omar Cotto Lozada at the plate, Maloof threw a wild pitch that advanced the runners, but was able to get the count to 1-2 as Cotto Lozada grounded out to third to end the game. Maloof earned his sixth save on the season for the Bulldogs.
