LOS ANGELES - Senior right-hander Logan Odom (Central Point, Ore.) threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings Sunday as the USC Trojans shut out the No. 13 UCLA Bruins, 2-0, in the 2011 Dodgertown Classic finale. Odom allowed just four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in front of 11,680 at Dodger Stadium.
Ricky Oropesa and Adam Landecker had RBI singles for the Trojans (5-10) to drop the Bruins to 8-6 on the season. UCLA freshman starter Adam Plutko (2-1) took his first loss of the season after entering the game with a 0.47 ERA, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in six innings.
After Plutko struck out the first two batters in the USC third, Kevin Roundtree was hit by a Plutko pitch. James Roberts then walked to put runners at first and second before Oropesa blooped a single to right for the first run. Cody Keefer walked and stole second with two outs in the top of the fourth, but after Jeff Gelalich beat out an infield single, Oropesa made a heads-up play and threw to third base as Keefer was tagged for the third out by Adam Landecker.
Landecker delivered a single through the right side for the 2-0 lead in the fourth, scoring Alex Sherrod.
The Bruins' big chance came in the eighth with two outs and a runner at first. Relievers Matt Munson and Brad Douthit hit back-to-back batters to load the bases. USC closer Chad Smith came in to face first baseman Dean Espy and was able to get him to chase a high fastball for the strikeout to strand the bases. Smith earned his second save with 1 1/3 perfect innings for the Trojans.
USC begins a 10-game homestand on Tuesday (March 15) with a two-game series against Louisville. Tuesday's game starts at 6 p.m. while Wednesday's game is at 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live through a video webcast, along with Gametracker live stats, on usctrojans.com.
Notes: The Trojans' last shutout came on April 30, 2010, with the 6-0 win at home against Arizona...today was USC's first win over a ranked opponent in seven games this season...Logan Odom has a 1.66 ERA in his last three starts, allowing only four earned runs in 21 2/3 innings (all three starts were against ranked opponents).
