No. 9 USC Defeats No. 12 UCLA, 4-3
May 01, 2010 | Women's Rowing
USC's first varsity eight defeated UCLA's boat for the ninth time without a loss and Troy's varsity four boat also won as the Trojans improved to 9-0 in the all-time series with the Bruins.
In addition to remaining perfect against UCLA, USC also secured valuable points toward winning the Crosstown Gauntlet, the season-long competition between Trojans and Bruins in all sports. Five points were up for grabs for women's rowing. The winning school needs 57.5 points to clinch. USC now leads, 55-42.5.
In the first race, USC's novice eight of cox Tanya Ouyang, Rachel Moll, Karley Kirk, Barbra Romer, Hannah Bowen, Cailin McLennan, Anne Turner, Andrea Oaxaca and Melanie Grindle fell to UCLA, 7:19.00 to 7:22.40, as the Bruins claimed the first point.
The varsity four was next and was a tight affair, but USC's cox Caroline Trawick, Carin Andersson, Kate McFetridge, Caroline Sederowsky and Andrea Vehovec were able to hold off the Bruins, 7:37.92 to 7:39.01, to even the dual at one point apiece.
Troy's second varsity eight of cox Jennah Blau, Marlena Adamska, Magda Janicka, Gabriela Zarate-DeMacedo, Jelena Zelenovic, Ewelina Nowak, Anna Janicka, Emily Hacker and Kinga Mikolajczyk was beaten by the Bruins, 6:53.26 to 7:000.92, as UCLA took a 2-1 lead heading into the final race of the day.
But that is where USC is strongest. The Trojans' first varsity eight lineup of cox Dionne Licudine, Ivana Filipovic, Liene Bertasjus, Lenka Vrecnikova, Helen Tinkus, Anna Wierzbowska, Maria Wilgotsson, Iskra Angelova and Ewa Tymoszewska posted a dominant win over UCLA, winning 6:37.37 to 6:47.47, snaring the final three points of the dual and clinching the win. The Trojans' varsity eight, one of the top varsity eights in the nation, has been beaten only one time this year, by highly ranked Virginia.
