USC Women’s Rowing’s Second Varsity Eight Makes Grand Finals at the Big Ten Championships
May 15, 2026 | Women's Rowing
The Trojans raced on short notice during the first day of the Big Ten Championships.
INDIANAPOLIS — Highlighted by the Second Varsity Eight qualifying for the Big Ten Championships Grand Finals, the USC Women's Rowing Team completed the first day of the conference championships at the Indianapolis Rowing Center on Friday, May 15.
The Trojans overcame racing on a quick turnaround after the first day of the Big Ten Championships was moved up to Friday due to inclement weather on Saturday. Competing with about 12 fewer hours of preparation than planned, the Trojans sent one boat into Sunday's Grand Finals, while two more boats were one spot away from making the Grand Finals.
The first USC boat to compete, the Second Varsity Eight kicked off the Big Ten Championships on a high note as it placed third in 7:17.852. During the early stages, the Trojans held steady in fourth and were three seats back from third-place UCLA three minutes into the race. USC and UCLA traded moves as they increased their rates, then USC pulled even and eventually moved into third at the 1-kilometer mark. Ahead by several seats as they passed the red buoys, the Trojans used a strong finishing surge to win bow-over-stern against UCLA.
Competing in the same heat as defending Big Ten Champion Washington, the Varsity Eight found themselves jockeying for the final two qualifying spots with UCLA and Michigan. USC chased UCLA from the get-go and tried tracking down the Bruins as they had a five-second advantage at the 1-kilometer mark. UCLA and Michigan State increased their rates in the second half of the race, eventually extending an open-water lead over USC as the Trojans settled for fourth place in 7:07.309.
After an intermission, the Varsity Fours were level with third-place UCLA in the first kilometer of the race as the four boats tried chasing down the eventual winner from Rutgers. Although USC was in contention for a qualifying spot through the first half of the race, the Trojans placed fifth in 8:17.224.
In what was the closest battle for the qualifying spots of the evening, the Second Varsity Four started strong in second place as Rutgers quickly had an open-water lead over the field. Michigan and Ohio State inched ahead of USC early, while Iowa joined the four-boat race close behind as all boats jockeyed for the final two spots. Ohio State took the lead of the chase pack at the midway mark, but USC hung in contention with Michigan and Ohio State. However, Michigan broke away and Ohio State increased its rate in the final 500 meters to win bow over stern over USC, which placed fourth in 8:02.228.
Finishing off the day, the Third Varsity Four placed fifth in their heat with a time of 8:03.727.
The final day of the Big Ten Championships is scheduled for Sunday, May 17. USC's first race will be the 3V8+ Petite Final at 6:50 a.m. PT. All races will be livestreamed on Big Ten Plus, which can be accessed on the women's rowing team's schedule page on usctrojans.com.
