Sophomore T.J. Vogel is fifth and freshman Jeffrey Kang is tied for seventh as the pair led the USC men's golf team on a 36-hole first day of the 2010 Jack Nicklaus Invitational, hosted by Ohio State, Monday (Oct. 11) in Columbus, Ohio.
Rebounding from a tough first outing two weeks ago, the Trojans are tied for fourth with Texas in a tough 10-team field at 26-over 586 (287-299), eight strokes behind first-place Arkansas (578). Oklahoma State is second (580) with Illinois third (581). Host Ohio State is sixth (589) with Purdue seventh (596), LSU eighth (597), Baylor ninth (600) and Kent State 10th (609).
USC was in second after a strong first round, and despite falling off in the second round, is still in the hunt for a first-place finish.
Vogel's first round featured five birdies against three bogeys to finish at 2-under 70. He spent much of the second round at 2-over and was looking at a par day before he got tripped up with a double bogey on the second to last hole. Still he is only two strokes out of first at 2-over 142 (68-74).
Kang is tied for seventh at 4-over 144 (73-71). His 3-over first round saw him birdie three holes, including two on an even back 9. He was 3-over again over the first nine holes of his second round, but played a great back half, going 2-under to finish in the top 10 for the day.
Junior Steve Lim, in his first action of the season, is tied for 22nd at 9-over 149 (72-77). Sophomores Stewart Hagestad is tied for 33rd at 11-over 151 (74-77) while sophomore Martin Trainer is tied for 36th at 12-over 152 (74-78).
Action concludes Tuesday.
