
No. 1 USC Men's Volleyball Defeats Ohio State

Murphy Troy had 12 kills and Tony Ciarelli tied the school record with 8 aces to lead the top-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 20-30, 30-26, 30-25, 30-14 victory over No. 10 Ohio State on Friday (Jan. 8) on the second day of the Outrigger Hotels Invitational in Honolulu, Hi.
Ciarelli equalled Beau Rawi's 2001 USC mark for most aces in a match (Rawi did it against UC Irvine). He added 8 kills, 9 digs and 4 blocks for the Trojans (2-0), while Austin Zahn had 7 kills (hitting .500) and Riley McKibbin had 12 digs.
USC rested starters Hunter Current and Tri Bourne. In their place, respectively, Steven Shandrick had 6 kills while hitting .417 and added 8 blocks, while Sean Dennis had 6 kills and 5 digs.
For Ohio State (0-2), Shawn Sangrey had 19 kills and 7 blocks and John Klanac had 14 kills and 8 digs.
Both teams hit for a low percentage, as USC was at .160 and the Buckeyes at .145. But the Trojans served 13 aces.
The Trojans, who swept No. 5 Penn State on Jan. 7, conclude play in the Outrigger Hotels Invitational against host No. 12 Hawaii on Saturday (Jan. 9) at 7 p.m. HT.
