The USC women's basketball team began the second half of the Pac-10 season with a win over UCLA, 61-56, on Saturday (Feb. 10). The victory avenged an earlier season loss to the Bruins and broke a two-game losing streak for the Women of Troy. This week, USC travels to Arizona to face the Arizona State Sun Devils on Thursday (Feb. 15) at 7 p.m. MT, and the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday (Feb. 18) at 2 p.m MT. The USC-Arizona game will be televised and aired live on Fox Sports West 2 at 1 p.m. PT.
AT THIS TIME A YEAR AGO
Nine games into the 2000 Pac-10 season, USC was in a familiar
position. The Trojans were 3-6 in conference play with nine games
left. USC embarked on a 7-2 conference run, eventually earning a bid
to the WNIT. It could be said that a win at home against UCLA on Feb.
12, 2000, turned the season around for the Women of Troy.
LAST WEEK'S GAME NOTES
For the first time this season, a freshman did not lead the team in
points and/or rebounds in USC's victory against the Bruins.
Prior to Saturday, a freshman had led in scoring the last 12 con-secutive
games.
Denise Woods tied a career high with five blocks against UCLA.
USC EARNS GAME #20
USC defended its home court Saturday, defeating UCLA 61-56 be-fore
2,136 at the Sports Arena. The Bruins took a 13-6 (12:52) lead
at the start of the game. However, a jumper by Denise Woods at the
eight minute mark gave the lead to the Women of Troy (14-13). The
Trojans never looked back, going on a 10-0 run to go up 28-17 (3:28).
USC held a eight-point advantage at the break (34-26). In the second
half, UCLA held USC scoreless for the first three minutes, but the
Women of Troy regained their composure and went on a 10-2 run,
led by two quick shots by Woods to go up 47-36 (12:23). UCLA's
Michelle Greco stopped USC's run with a three-pointer and then led
the Bruins on a 14-3 run of their own to get the deficit down to only
two points, 52-50, with four minutes on the clock. That was as close
as UCLA would get. USC withstood the run and hit key free throws
in the final minutes to defeat the Bruins and earn a split in this year's
rivalry.
