Los Angeles, Calif. - No.1/4 USC women's volleyball (13-0, 7-0 Pac-10) defeated the eighth-ranked UCLA Bruins 15-11, 15-11, 8-15, 15-11 in front of 1,057 Friday night (Oct. 6) at North Gym. Despite enduring their first game loss of the season (USC is now 39-1 in single game victories), the Women of Troy remain undefeated in 2000.
In their longest match of the season (2:27), the Women of Troy managed to out-do the Bruins in hitting percentage (.291 to .221), digs (75 to 68) and blocks (15.0 to 9.0). While the Bruins collected 91 team kills compared to the Trojans' 78, it was USC's defensive efforts that kept it ahead of the game.
The Women of Troy jumped out to an 11-3 lead to begin game one, and after allowing the Bruins to rally off the next five points, the Trojans reached game point ahead by six (14-8). Antoinette Polk served an ace for the 15-11 win, then repeated the performance in game two capping off the victory with a kill.
USC struggled in the third set, allowing UCLA to take the first lead (5-1). The teams tied the score at seven apiece, but this time it was the Bruins who rallied the final eight points to briefly turn the tables with a game three win.
Game four saw the score knotted at 6-6 before USC began to build its momentum. Forcing three consecutive UCLA attack errors, the Trojans increased their lead 10-6. Another attack error eventually ended the game and the match for the Bruins as USC claimed the final 15-11 victory for the match.
The Trojans received outstanding performances from all six starters. Among them, Polk finished with 17 kills and 12 digs, April Ross led with 25 kills, a .352 attack percentage and 12 digs, Janae Henry added 12 kills and a career-high 25 digs, and Katie Olsovsky added seven blocks.
UCLA was led by Kristee Porter who pounded 30 kills off of 72 attacks (.236), and Lauren Fendrick who hit for .464 (15 kills).
USC will resume conference play next Thursday (Oct. 12) and Friday (Oct. 13) at Arizona State and Arizona.
