Women's Hoops Wins Opener

LOS ANGELES - Senior center Adrain Williams and sophomore forward Tashara Carter each had double-doubles to lead the USC women's basketball team to a season-opening 71-54 victory over Boise State in the Lyon Center on Thursday night in front of 475.
Both Williams and Carter had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Women of Troy (1-0).
Boise State (1-1) was led by sophomore guard Yvette Barrios, who scored a game-high 21 points, but only three of which came in the second half.
The Broncos actually led for a good portion of the game, including a 33-31 edge at halftime.
But USC took the lead for good at 39-38 with 15:24 left on a lay-up by freshman guard Tiffany Elmore.
It was still a one-point game with less than seven minutes to play, but Williams hit two free throws, then made a steal at mid-court and drove for a lay-up to push the lead to five, 53-48. Not long after, USC's lead went into double-digits.
"Our conditioning came through for us," USC Coach Chris Gobrecht said. "We seemed to have more than them coming down the stretch. We played smart, had poise and made the right adjustments. This proves that conditioning can win games for us."
The Women of Troy, who dressed only eight players, had half the team in foul trouble down the stretch (two fouled out).
USC also got a team-high 15 points and seven assists from senior guard Kristin Clark, 11 points from Elmore and eight points and nine rebounds from junior forward Tiffany Washington.
USC's next game is at Fresno State on Sunday (Nov. 22) at noon.
