LOS ANGELES - The USC women's basketball team was defeated by Arizona, 68-62, on Thursday night (Mar. 4) at the Sports Arena in front of their largest home crowd of the season, 1,673.
The Women of Troy fell to 7-19 overall, 3-14 in the Pacific-10 Conference, while the Wildcats improved to 17-9, 12-5.
USC's junior forward Tiffany Washington had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while senior center Adrain Williams posted 15 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Tashara Carter contributed 14 points with six rebounds.
Arizona was lead by junior forward Angela Lackey, who had a game-high 20 points and seven rebounds, sophomore guard ReShea Bristol added 14 points, five rebounds and five steals. Freshman forward Elizabeth Pickney finished out Arizona's double digit scoring with 11 points and five rebounds.
Arizona outrebounded USC, 39-30, and shot 49 percent from the field to the Women of Troy's 39 percent.
The Women of Troy led, 37-23, at halftime using a 9-4 run to tie it at 11:57 (14 to 14) and never looked back, using Arizona's 17 first-half turnovers to their advantage.
The Women of Troy came out slow in the second-half allowing Arizona to get back in the game with a 14-2 run, tying the score again with 14:38 remaining in the second-half (39-39). The Wildcats took as much as a 47-41 lead before USC battled to regain the lead, 50-47, with 8:13 remaining in the game. The game stayed close to the end, but Arizona finished it off with an 8 to 2 run.
"We were not very poised in the second half. Arizona came out very aggressive in the second half and we did not make the adjustments needed to stay with them," said USC head coach Chris Gobrecht. "Our back court inexperience was glaring. We just didn't handle the changes Arizona made. We needed to pick up when they picked up and we just didn't get it done."
The Women of Troy will host Arizona on Saturday (Mar. 6) at 7 p.m. in the Lyon Center in their last game of the season.
