Women's Basketball Signs Three Recruits

LOS ANGELES - Center Portia Mitchell and guard Jessica Cheeks from Narbonne High in Los Angeles, along with guard/forward Tennille Grant from Northeast High School in Kansas City (Mo.), signed letters of intent with USC, women's basketball head coach Chris Gobrecht announced today.
"These are three potential high impact players." said Gobrecht. "We are thrilled to have them join us at USC. They will contribute greatly to the future of our program."
The 6-4 Mitchell and 5-8 Cheeks were 1998 Street and Smith All-American honorable mention picks while leading Narbonne to the California state championships.
"Portia can do many things at her size," said Gobrecht. "She can be the power player or she can put in the soft shot. She has the size and skill to go up against any player in the country. Jessica has all the skills you could want in your off-guard position. She can knock down the three pointer or finish on the break. She is a terrific athlete with great basketball instincts."
Grant, a 5-10 guard/forward earned first team All-Metro and All-State honors in 1998, averaging 26 points, 10 rebounds, three steals, and three assists per game. She was named the Interscholastic League's Most Valuable Player in women's basketball and receieved Nike All-American honorable mention and Street and Smith All-American honorable mention honors.
"Tennille fits the USC profile perfectly," said Gobrecht. "She is a 4.0 student and is very involved in her community. She is a productive player who can hurt you in many ways on the court."
