LOS ANGELES - The Women of Troy (6-14 overall, 2-9 in conference) will host California (8-11, 2-8) on Friday (Feb. 12) at 7:00 p.m. and Stanford (12-9, 8-2) Sunday (Feb. 14) at 1 p.m. The game against Stanford will be televised live on Fox Sports Network.
California - The Bears (8-11, 2-8) are led by junior forward Paige Bowie, who has 12 points per game and 4.1 rebounds per game, while senior center Jennie Leander is posting 9.5 ppg and 5.7 rpg. California has lost their last two games with their last win against Arizona State, 74-60. USC is 22-9 in the all-time series with the Bears. The Women of Troy lost the last match-up between the teams, 51-61, on Jan. 16 earlier this season, but have won 11 of the last 12 meetings.
Stanford - The Cardinal (12-9, 8-2) are led by freshman guard Lindsey Yamasaki and sophomore center Carolyn Moos, who both have 14 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Stanford has won their last five games and last eight of ten, falling only to Oregon and UCLA since Pac-10 conference play began. Stanford leads the all-time series between the two teams 22-15 and has won the last ten meetings. USC last won a home game against Stanford on Jan. 30, 1994.
LAST game - The Women of Troy were defeated by Oregon, 73-61, on Saturday at McArthur Court in Eugene, Ore. USC managed to cut Oregon's lead to four points (53-49) in the second half but could not take over. Sophomore forward Tashara Cater and junior forward/center Tiffany Washington each had 17 points. Tiffany Elmore scored 13 points while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.
Notes - Senior center Adrain Williams left the UCLA game (Jan. 23) early in the first half with a right ankle injury. Williams has not played in the last five games. Her status is questionable for this weekend. After starting the season with six guards, only two are remaining, freshmen Tiffany Elmore and Camille Norwood. USC has started three freshman in the last five games, Tiffany Elmore, Carmen Krause and Camille Norwood.
MISSING IN ACTION - The Women of Troy have been shorthanded since the preseason began for a variety of reasons. Senior center Adrain Williams has not played in the last five games with a right ankle injury. Senior guard Kristin Clark has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will not return to the line-up for USC. Clark had surgery on her right knee friday (Jan. 22). The injury occurred in the first half of the Arizona game. Clark holds the USC record for three pointers made in a career along with Tammy Story (tied at 110) and had just passed the 200 career steal mark, finishing with 203. Clark is the fourth guard to leave the USC line-up this season. Junior guard Kiyoko Miller sprained her right shoulder in a scrimage, her status is uncertain for the season. Junior guard Erica Mashia will not be returning to play due to an ACL injury. Mashia was expected to make a miracle comeback this season after being forced to miss the 1997 and 1998 seasons with a career-threatening hip injury. She was a Pac-10 freshman team selection in 1996 and is known for her abilities behind the three-point arc and free throw line. Junior guard Kim Clark, a midfielder for USC's soccer team, broke her leg in a soccer game (Nov. 1) and will be out indefinitely.
Under the basket - USC has three players in the Top 10 in rebounding for the the Pacific-10 conference. Senior center holds third place with 8.6 rebounds, junior forward Tiffany Washington comes 6th with her 6.3 rpg and sophomore forward Tashara Carter takes 8th with 5.9 rpg. USC is the only Pac-10 school with three players in the Top 10 in rebounding.
CHRIS GOBRECHT - Twenty years after graduating from USC in 1977 to embark on a coaching career, Gobrecht returned to campus to take the helm of the Women of Troy basketball program. On May 8, 1997, she replaced Fred Williams, who left after two years as USC's coach. Gobrecht, 42, who played basketball and volleyball while at USC, has been a head coach at the Division I level for 20 years, having guided programs at Cal State Fullerton (six years), Washington (11) and Florida State (one). She was a two-time Pacific-10 Coach of the Year (1987-88) with the Huskies and has amassed a 350-232 career mark. She reached the 300-victory plateau on Jan. 19, 1995, at the age of 39, making her one of the youngest coaches to do so in America. Gobrecht is the second winningest coach in the Pac-10 after 12 years in the conference with a record of 155-91. She has also coached at the national and international levels. She was an assistant for a 1990 USA Basketball select team which traveled to Czechoslovakia and Italy. In 1989, she led the East Team to a silver medal in the U.S. Olympic Festival. Under her maiden name of Chris Geiger, she was a three-year starter on USC's basketball team. She also played volleyball for the Women of Troy for two years. She received her bachelor's degree in public affairs from USC in 1977.
KRISTIN CLARK - Senior guard Kristin Clark has suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee and is out of the USC line-up. The injury will end her career as a Women of Troy guard. Clark had an average of 14.5 ppg, 2.4 rpg and 3.45 apg after playing in the first 11 games of the season. Clark was USC's leading scorer in the 1997-98 season, averaging 16.0 ppg. She is currently second on the Women of Troy's career three-point chart, needing only one three-pointers to top the chart. She is currently tied with Tammy Story. Clark was a 1998 All-Pac-10 selection.
Adrain Williams - Senior center Adrain Williams is USC's leading scorer, averaging 15.4 ppg, 8.6 rpg and 1.50 apg. Williams left the UCLA game (Jan. 23) early in the first half with a right ankle injury. Her status for this weekend's games is uncertain. Williams is third in the Pac-10 in rebounds and fifth in scoring. She had 19 points and eight rebounds against Stanford (Jan. 14). Williams earned her seventh double-double of the season against Oregon State (Jan. 10), with 18 points and 10 rebounds. She collected 19 points and seven rebounds against Oregon (Jan. 8). Against Arizona State (Jan. 2), Williams had 22 points and eight rebounds and had 16 points and nine rebounds against Arizona (Jan. 4). She had 13 points and 10 rebounds against UCSB (Dec. 29). Williams had a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds against her hometown school Fresno State (Nov. 22). Williams earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention honors during the 1997-98 season.
Tiffany Washington - Junior forward Tiffany Washington is a force in the paint at both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Washington is sixth in the Pac-10 in rebounds with 6.3 per game. She is averaging 8.6 ppg. Washington posted 10 points and six rebounds against Oregon State (Feb. 4) and 17 points with four rebounds against Oregon (Feb. 6). She had her second double-double against Washington (Jan. 30) with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Washington had 14 points and 11 rebounds against Washington State (Jan. 28) with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She had She collected nine points and eight rebounds against UCLA (Jan. 23). Washington had eight points and six rebounds against California (Jan. 16). In the game against Oregon she collected six points. Washington started in 24 games for the Women of Troy in the 1997-98 season and collected 8.9 ppg and 6.1 rpg.
Tashara Carter - Sophomore forward Tashara Carter continues to hold the starting position she earned as a freshman last season. She is averaging 8.9 ppg and 5.9 rpg this season. She collected eight points with seven rebounds against Oregon State (Feb. 4) and a season-high 17 points and six rebonds against Oregon (Feb. 6). Carter posted 16 points against Washington (Jan. 30) and had her fourth double-double of the season against Washington State (Jan. 28) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Carter had a season-high 15 points and five rebounds against UCLA (Jan. 23). Against Stanford (Jan. 14), Carter had 11 points and 11 rebounds and had six points and 10 rebounds against California (Jan. 16). Carter had 12 points and four rebounds against Oregon State (Jan. 10). Carter was a 1998 All-Pac-10 freshman team honorable mention selection.
Tiffany Elmore - Freshman guard Tiffany Elmore has earned a starting guard position for the Women of Troy this season. Elmore is averaging 11.8 points per game and has 3.6 rebounds per game. She had 13 points and seven rebounds against Oregon (Feb. 6). Elmore had 20 points against Washington (Jan. 30) and 12 points against Washington State (Jan. 28). She collected a team-high 16 points against UCLA (Jan. 23). She had eight points against Stanford (Jan. 14) and seven points against California (Jan. 16). In the game against Oregon State, Elmore had six points and had eight points against Oregon (Jan. 8). She had 11 points and eight rebounds against Arizona State (Jan. 2) and five points and four rebounds against Arizona (Jan. 4). Elmore had a career-high 24 points and five rebounds in the game against Drake (Nov. 25). As a 1998 senior, Elmore was a Student Sports All-State first team selection and the Sacramento Bee's All-Area Player of the Year.
Carmen Krause - Freshman forward Carmen Krause is making a name for herself as a starter, providing size and quickness in the paint and a knack for rebounding. Krause is averaging 3.7 ppg and 3.2 rpg. Krause posted five points and seven rebounds against Oregon State (Feb. 4). She collected nine points and six rebounds against Washington State (Jan. 28). Krause had six points and four rebounds against California (Jan. 16). She posted six points and five rebounds against Oregon (Jan. 8). Krause had five points against Arizona State and had four points and three rebounds against Arizona (Jan. 4). Krause comes to USC from Prescott, Arizona where she was a 1998 All-State second team selection and All-Area Player of the Year. Camille norwood - Freshman guard Camille Norwood adds good ball handling skills and a nice offensive touch. She has taken a starting position for the Women of Troy in the last five games. Norwood is averaging 3.9 ppg. She had a career-high 12 points against Oregon State (Feb. 4) and nine points against Oregon (Feb. 6). She posted five points and three steals against Washington (Jan. 30). She had four points against UCLA (Jan. 23). Norwood collected seven points against Stanford (Jan.14) and 10 points against California (Jan. 16). She collected a career-high tying seven points against Oregon State (Jan. 10). She had seven points against Arizona (Jan. 4), while playing 27 minutes. Norwood was a All-City Section 4-A first team selection and was named 1998 L.A. Times Central City Player of the Year. She averaged 24.5 ppg as a senior at Washington HS (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Whitney Houser - Sophomore forward Whitney Houser adds depth to the USC with her quickness and hustle on the court. She is averaging 4.0 ppg and 2.2 rpg this season. Houser had six points and five rebounds against Oregon State (Feb. 4). She contributed seven points and three rebounds against Oregon (Jan. 8). Houser had four points against Arizona State (Jan. 2) and had a season-high 15 points against Arizona (Jan. 4). She collected four points and six rebounds against UCSB (Dec. 29). Houser posted six points and four rebounds against Cal State Northridge (Dec. 12). She had nine points and five rebounds in the game against Boise State (Nov. 19). In the 1997-98 season, Houser averaged 5.1 ppg and 3.0 rpg.
Aimee Copp - Junior forward Aimee Copp transferred to USC from Fullerton College and has played in six games for USC so far this season. Copp is averaging 2.0 ppg and 1.0 rpg. Copp had four points against Washignton (Jan. 30) and Washington State (Jan.28). She posted two points and five rebounds against UCLA (Jan. 23). She contributed five points and three rebounds against Oregon State (Jan. 10).
Adria Sneed - Senior forward Adria Sneed continues to serve as a reserve and is a solid rebounding force. She had four points against Oregon State (Feb. 4) and two points against Oregon (Feb. 6). Sneed posted four points and four rebounds against UCLA (Jan. 23). In her junior season with the Women of Troy, Sneed averaged 2.0 ppg and 1.7 rpg.
Kiyoko Miller - Junior guard Kiyoko Miller sprained her right shoulder after playing in four games this season, her status for the rest of the season is questionable. She had been averaging 3.8 ppg for USC this season. Miller started in 21 games for USC in the 1997-98 season, averaging 7.5 ppg.
