Trojans Host Oregon and Oregon State in Pac-10 Play

LOS ANGELES - The Women of Troy (1-1 in conference, 5-6 overall) will host Oregon (2-0, 11-2) on Friday (Jan. 8) at 7:00 p.m. and will face Oregon State (1-1, 9-2) on Sunday (Jan. 10) at 7 p.m. The Women of Troy are 21-8 in the all-time series with the Ducks and are 21-7 in the all-time series with the Beavers.
Oregon - The Ducks (2-0 in conference play) are led by sophomore forward Brianne Meharry, who is averaging 12.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg and sophomore forward Angelina Wolvert, who is averaging 10.5 ppg and 5.5 rpg. The last meeting between the teams was Feb. 8, 1998 resulting in a USC loss, 58-76. The Women of Troy have lost the last three games between the teams. Oregon has won their last six straight games.
Oregon State - The Beavers (1-1 in conference) are led by junior r center Sissel Pierce, who has 12.2 ppg and 6.6 rpg and junior forward Tammy Arnold, who has 10.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg. The Women of Troy are 12-3 at home against Oregon State all-time. The last meeting between the teams was Feb. 6, 1998, resulting in a 80-68 USC victory.
LAST week - The Women of Troy split their two games in Arizona over the weekend. USC defeated Arizona State, 67-54, on Saturday (Jan. 2). Senior center Adrain Williams collected a game-high 22 points and added eight rebounds and two blocks, while sophomore forward Tashara Carter contributed a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Tiffany Elmore posted 11 points and eight rebounds in the victory. On Monday (Jan. 4), USC fell to Arizona, 73-63. The Women of Troy were up 36-29 at the half and stayed close in the second half after senior point guard Kristin Clark left the game with an injury to her right knee. Williams had 16 points and nine rebounds, while sophomore forward Whitney Houser had 15 points.
Notes - Junior forward Aimee Copp has now played in all three games since becoming eligible on Dec. 29. She has transferred to USC from Fullerton College where she earned 1998 Orange Empire Conference first-team honors and averaged 16.4 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. Copp figures to add a strong rebounding and inside scoring presence for the Women of Troy. Senior guard Kristin Clark injured her right knee in the matchup with Arizona (Jan. 4) and will not play in this weekends games against the Oregon schools. She collected her 200th career assist in the game against UC Santa Barbara and tied with Tammy Story at 110 three-point field goals made for career three-pointers.
MISSING IN ACTION - The Women of Troy have been shorthanded since the preseason began for a variety of reasons. Junior guard Kiyoko Miller sprained her right shoulder ina scrimage, her status is uncertain for the season. Junior guard Erica Mashia will not be returning to play due to an ACL injury. Mashia was expected to make a miracle comeback this season after being forced to miss the 1997 and 1998 seasons with a career-threatening hip injury. She was a Pac-10 freshman team selection in 1996 and is known for her abilities behind the three-point arc and free throw line. Junior guard Kim Clark, a midfielder for USC's soccer team, broke her leg in a soccer game (Nov. 1) and will be out indefinitely.
CHRIS GOBRECHT - Twenty years after graduating from USC in 1977 to embark on a coaching career, Gobrecht returned to campus to take the helm of the Women of Troy basketball program. On May 8, 1997, she replaced Fred Williams, who left after two years as USC,s coach. Gobrecht, 42, who played basketball and volleyball while at USC, has been a head coach at the Division I level for 20 years, having guided programs at Cal State Fullerton (six years), Washington (11) and Florida State (one). She was a two-time Pacific-10 Coach of the Year (1987-88) with the Huskies and has amassed a 349-224 career mark. She reached the 300-victory plateau on Jan. 19, 1995, at the age of 39, making her one of the youngest coaches to do so in America. Gobrecht is the second winningest coach in the Pac-10 after 12 years in the conference with a record of 154-83. She has also coached at the national and international levels. She was an assistant for a 1990 USA Basketball select team which traveled to Czechoslovakia and Italy. In 1989, she led the East Team to a silver medal in the U.S. Olympic Festival. Under her maiden name of Chris Geiger, she was a three-year starter on USC's basketball team. She also played volleyball for the Women of Troy for two years. She received her bachelor's degree in public affairs from USC in 1977.
KRISTIN CLARK - Senior guard Kristin Clark is off to a quick start this season averaging 14.5 ppg, 2.4 rpg and 3.45 apg. She is sixth in the Pac-10 in scoring and is tied for ninth in steals. Clark injured her right knee in the game against Arizona (Jan. 4) and will not play in this weekends games against Oregon and Oregon State. Her status for the rest of the season is undertermined at this time. She had 16 points, three assists and earned her 200th career steal against UCSB (Dec. 29). Clark had 17 points against Western Kentucky (12/20). She collected 21 points, four assists and four steals against Cal State Northridge. She scored a game-high 24 points and had three assists and three steals in USC's 86-71 victory over Drake (Nov. 25). Clark was USC's leading scorer in the 1997-98 season, averaging 16.0 ppg. She is currently second on the Women of Troy's career three-point chart, needing only one three-pointers to top the chart. She is currently tied with Tammy Story. Clark was a 1998 All-Pac-10 selection.
Adrain williams - Senior center Adrain Williams is USC's leading scorer, averaging 16.0 ppg, 9.8 rpg and 1.73 apg. Williams is second in the Pac-10 in rebounds and fifth in scoring. Against Arizona State (Jan. 2), Williams had 22 points and eight rebounds and had 16 points and nine rebounds against Arizona (Jan. 4). She had her sixth double-double of the season against UCSB (Dec. 29) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Williams had a game-high 22 points and seven rebounds against her hometown school Fresno State (Nov. 22). She posted a team-high 16 points and collected 11 rebounds against Long Beach State (Dec. 5). Williams earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention honors during the 1997-98 season.
Tiffany washington - Junior forward Tiffany Washington is a force in the paint at both the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Washington is fifth in the Pac-10 in steals, averaging 2.55 per game and is ninth in the Pac-10 in rebounds with 6.5 per game. She is averaging 8.3 ppg. Washington had nine points and seven rebounds against Arizona State (Jan. 2) and posted eight points and 10 rebounds against Arizona (Jan. 4). She had four points and five rebounds against UCSB (Dec. 29). Washington collected 10 points and seven rebounds in the victory over Cal State Northridge (Dec. 12). Against Drake (Nov. 25), Washington had 11 points, five rebounds and five steals. Washington started in 24 games for the Women of Troy in the 1997-98 season and collected 8.9 ppg and 6.1 rpg.
Tashara Carter - Sophomore forward Tashara Carter continues to hold the starting position she earned as a freshman last season. She is averaging 7.0 ppg and 5.4 rpg this season. She recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Arizona State (Jan. 2). Against UCSB (Dec. 29), Carter had eight points and six rebounds. Carter had 14 points and 11 rebounds in USC's victory over Boise State (Nov. 19) and had 10 points and six rebounds against Fresno State (Nov. 22). Carter was a 1998 All-Pac-10 freshman team honorable mention selection.
Tiffany Elmore - Freshman guard Tiffany Elmore has earned a starting guard position for the Women of Troy this season. Elmore is averaging 12.9 points per game and has 4.2 rebounds per game. She had 11 points and eight rebounds against Arizona State (Jan. 2) and five points and four rebounds against Arizona (Jan. 4). Elmore collected a team-high 19 points against UCSB (Dec. 29). She scored 10 points and had four rebounds against Cal State Northridge (Dec. 12). Elmore had a career-high 24 points and five rebounds in the game against Drake (Nov. 25). As a 1998 senior, Elmore was a Student Sports All-State first team selection and the Sacramento Bee's All-Area Player of the Year.
Carmen Krause - Freshman forward Carmen Krause adds depth to the USC roster, providing size and quickness in the paint and a knack for rebounding. Krause is averaging 3.3 ppg and 2.5 rpg. Krause had five points against Arizona State and had four points and three rebounds against Arizona (Jan. 4). She contributed four points and two rebounds against UCSB (Dec. 29). Krause had nine points against Cal State Northridge (Dec. 12). She collected nine points and nine rebounds against Long Beach State (Dec. 5). Krause comes to USC from Prescott, Arizona where she was a 1998 All-State second team selection and All-Area Player of the Year.
Camille Norwood - Freshman guard Camille Norwood adds good ball handling skills and a nice offensive touch. Norwood is averaging 1.8 ppg and .73 apg. She had a career high seven points against Arizona (Jan. 4), while playing 27 minutes. Norwood was a All-City Section 4-A first team selection and was named 1998 L.A. Times Central City Player of the Year. She averaged 24.5 ppg as a senior at Washington HS (Los Angeles, Calif.).
Whitney Houser - Sophomore forward Whitney Houser add depth to the Women of Troy roster with her quickness and hustle on the court. She is averaging 4.4 ppg and 1.8 rpg this season. Houser had four points against Arizona State (Jan. 2) and had a season-high 15 points against Arizona (Jan. 4). She collected four points and six rebounds against UCSB (Dec. 29). Houser posted six points and four rebounds against Cal State Northridge (Dec. 12). She had nine points and five rebounds in the game against Boise State (Nov. 19). In the 1997-98 season, Houser averaged 5.1 ppg and 3.0 rpg.
Aimee Copp - Junior forward Aimee Copp transferred to USC from Fullerton College and has played in three games for USC this season. Copp is averaging 1.3 ppg. She collected two points against Arizona (Jan. 4) and two points against Arizona State (Jan. 2).
Adria Sneed - Senior forward Adria Sneed continues to serve as a reserve and is a solid rebounding force. In her junior season with the Women of Troy, Sneed averaged 2.0 ppg and 1.7 rpg.
Kiyoko miller - Junior guard Kiyoko Miller sprained her right shoulder after playing in four games this season, her status for the rest of the season is questionable. She had been averaging 3.8 ppg for USC this season. Miller started in 21 games for USC in the 1997-98 season, averaging 7.5 ppg.
