Men's Hoops Falls to Pac-10 Rival Cal

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Geno Carlisle scored 13 points, including a go-ahead jumper with 2:19 left and California withstood a flurry of 3-point tries in the final moments to beat Southern California 58-55 Thursday night.
Thomas Kilgore had 12 points and Raymond King added 10 for Cal (13-8, 4-7 Pac-10), which snapped a three-game losing streak. It was their seventh straight home win against the Trojans (11-10, 3-9).
Jeff Trepagnier led USC with 14 points, the only Trojans player in double figures. It was the eighth loss in nine games for USC, who played without Adam Spanich. The Trojans starting forward served a one-game suspension for violating an unspecified team rule.
Down by six at halftime, USC went in front 52-50 with 5:25 remaining when Elias Ayuso finished a fastbreak with a layup. After Kilgore made a pair of free throws, Brandon Granville made one of two to give the Trojans a 53-52 edge.
Cal then regained the lead for good when Carlisle hit a 17-foot jumper and Sean Lampley's layup off a feed from Carlisle put Bears up 56-53. A twisting layup from Trepagnier cut the deficit to one. But Carl Boyd, after USC coach Henry Bibby called a timeout, made both ends of a 1-and-1 with 29.4 seconds remaining.
Ayuso got off three 3-point tries in the final 13 seconds but all of them fell short.
After trailing by as many as 10 points early on, USC moved in front 25-23 on Brian Scalabrine's 12-foot fadeaway jumper. But Cal outscored the Trojans 11-3 in a 4:17 stretch to lead 34-28 at halftime.
King and Carlisle hit 3-pointers to start and finish the burst.
With the Trojans leading 49-47, King also had another crucial 3-pointer with 6:03 remaining, banking it off the glass for a 50-49 Cal lead.
