LOS ANGELES - Despite a 11-kill, 16-dig effort by OH Janae Henry, USC was outplayed by UCLA last night (Oct. 13) at Pauley Pavilion. Unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities, the Women of Troy surrendered a 3-0 (15-10, 15-10, 15-5) loss to the conference-leading Bruins.
USC falls to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the Pac-10, while UCLA improves to 15-1 overall and maintains a perfect 7-0 record in conference play.
Pac-10 defense leaders, Henry and OH Antoinette Polk, led the Trojans with 16 and 12 digs in the match, respectively. USC struggled at the net with a team .149 hitting percentage and only had two players who hit above .185. Freshman OH/MB Lauren Killian had five kills and a team-leading three blocks and setter Heidi Munneke added three kills (.375) and 34 assists.
The Bruins' power was driven by OH's Tamika Johnson and Kristee Porter. Johnson pounded 17 kills off of just 30 attacks (.500), while adding four blocks. Porter, who ranks 16th nationally in kills per game average, led with 20 kills (.208) in the match.
Throughout the match, USC struggled to take advantage of point-scoring opportunities. After a loss in game one (15-10), Troy allowed UCLA to take a 11-3 lead in game two. Not willing to back down, the Trojans rallied to score seven consecutive points following two kills by MB Jennifer Pahl. But UCLA returned to earn the win on a Trojan block and attack error. USC was plagued by errors in the third game, allowing the Bruins to score on six Trojan attack errors leading to a 15-5 defeat for the match victory.
USC will now travel north to face both Oregon and Oregon State. USC and the Beavers will battle on Friday, October 15 at 7 p.m. The Oregon-USC match will take place on Saturday, October 16 at 7 p.m.
