Dr. Michael Reutt, who has more than a decade of experience in collegiate athletics, enters his second season as USC’s assistant athletic director for men’s basketball operations. USC head coach Eric Musselman named him to the position on May 16, 2024.
Reutt arrived at USC after three seasons with the Stanford men’s basketball program, where he served as the Cardinal’s director of operations and administration in 2023–24. From 2021-23, Reuttheld the title of assistant director of basketball operations.
During his tenure at Stanford, Reutt was part of a staff that guided the Cardinal to three wins over AP Top-5 opponents, including a 100–82 triumph over No. 4 Arizona in 2023, handing the Wildcats their first conference loss of the year. He oversaw operational and administrative efforts during a period of both on-court achievement and individual player accolades. Notably, Harrison Ingram was named the 2022 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, Spencer Jones emerged as an all-conference forward and two different student-athletes — Sam Beskind (2022) and James Keefe (2023), earned Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors. In 2023, Brandon Angel and Michael Jones were also recognized as Academic All-Americans, highlighting the program’s commitment to athletic and academic excellence.
A Virginia Tech graduate, Reutt began his career as a four-year manager for the Hokies men’s basketball program (2014–18) before transitioning into academic services. He served as an academic coordinator at East Tennessee State from 2018–20 and at Idaho during the 2020–21 season, gaining valuable experience in student-athlete support and compliance.
In addition to his work in athletics, Reutt has played a key role in advancing leadership development across college sports through his involvement with TopConnect Leaders. Since 2020, he has served on the organization’s executive leadership team, helping to connect and prepare college coaches and administrators for high-level leadership opportunities.
Reutt earned his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech in 2018, his master’s from East Tennessee State in 2020 and later completed ETSU’s Global Sports Leadership Doctoral program in 2025.
