Jeffrey Liu is in his third season (2017) as the technical coordinator for both the USC men’s and women’s volleyball programs. He also serves as the technical coordinator for the U.S. Women’s National Team. Liu served on the USAV staff as the team won the 2017 Pan American Cup gold medal and qualified for the finals week of the World Grand Prix.
Liu previously served one year as an assistant coach for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County women’s volleyball team for the 2014 season. While there, the Retrievers went 10-15 overall with a 4-8 mark in the America East Conference. With UMBC, Liu was responsible for all aspects of DataVolley statistical collection, breakdown, and analysis, and was primarily responsible for coaching middle blockers and defense. While with the Retrievers, Liu helped freshmen middles Paola Rojas and Marissa Duncan earn selections to the America East All-Rookie Team.
Liu has also served as an assistant coach in the USA Volleyball High Performance Program. He helped both the 2015 Select A2 Invitational Team and the A3 National Training Program Team to second-place finishes at respective tournaments. In 2016, Liu served as the associate head coach of the USAV Select A2 Invitational Team and helped lead the squad to a semifinal tournament appearance.
Liu was also a volunteer court coach from 2014-16 for the USAV High Performance tryouts and has served as a DataVolley Intern and volunteer assistant coach with the U.S. Women’s National Team.
Liu gained his first collegiate coaching experience at University of Saint Joseph (DIII) in West Hartford, Conn., as assistant coach and technical skills director (2012-14). During that time, Liu was also a head coach at the CT Volleyball Academy (2011-14). He was a co-founder of the academy and was also the academy’s webmaster and social media director. Since 2014, he has also served as a court coach for the Gold Medal Squared Coaches Clinics.
Liu graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in business and technology in 2008. While at Stevens, the Livingston, N.J. native founded the men’s club volleyball team and served as the squad’s assistant coach and four-year team captain.
While in college, Liu coached at Livingston High School as the boys’ junior varsity assistant coach in his first two seasons (2004-05), the girls’ junior varsity assistant coach for two seasons (2005-06) and an assistant coach for the girls’ varsity team for six seasons (2006-11). His teams went 104-26 while he was on staff, won four conference titles, and won the 2011 NJSIAA Group 4 State Championship.
Liu is USA Volleyball Beach CAP and USA Volleyball CAP II certified. He also has Level I training in Gold Medal Squared and is a Level II certified Double Goal coach by the Positive Coaching Alliance.
Liu holds a masters of arts in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in Irvine (2016). He resides in Culver City, Calif.
