This Season: Joao Ama, a 2020 junior, is a versatile second-year Trojan who will look to be a contributing scorer in a variety of freestyle events.
2019: Ama raced in three events at the 2019 Pac-12 Championships as a first-year sophomore, highlighted by a 24th in the 200y free (1:39.69, PR). He was also 28th in the 100y free (44.68, PR) and 37th in the 50y free (20.84).
Arizona State: Ama, as 2017 freshman at Arizona State, provided depth for the Sun Devils in the 50y and 100y free and raced at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships as an exhibition swimmer.
High School: Ama prepped at Gunn High in Palo Alto where, as a senior, he helped the school win – anchoring the final crown-clinching relay -- the CIF Central Coast championship in 2016, ending Bellarmine College Prep’s 31-year title-winning streak. Ama was third in both the 50y and 100y free at the meet … He was a two-time California state B finalist in the 50y and 100y free as a 2016 senior.
Personal: Ama is majoring in applied and computational mathematics, economics. He speaks Portuguese and Spanish in addition to English.
