BREAKDOWN: Malik Marquetti is a 6-foot-6, 195-pound sophomore wing who provides the Trojans with versatility as he can play multiple positions. He plays with a toughness and his long wingspan helps make him an excellent defender. Voted by the team as one of USC's two captains for the 2015-16 season.
2014-15: Marquetti played in all 32 games, making 15 starts, and averaged 3.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. He ranked among the top five on the team in assists (29), steals (22), three-pointers made (15) and total rebounds (86). Marquetti averaged 7.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and shot 45.0 percent from three-point range (9-for-20) in USC's final five games of the season. Made his first career start in USC's 75-71 win at Boston College on Dec. 21...had four points, six rebounds and two assists. Started 15 of USC's final 22 games, including the final six. Reached double figures in scoring for the first time with 10 points vs. UCLA on Jan. 14...made all three attempts from three-point range. Scored a season-high 16 points vs. Washington State on Feb. 25...made a career-high four three-pointers (4-for-7). Made 12 of 29 three-point attempts (41.4 percent) in the final 16 games, after making three of his first 21 attempts (14.3 percent) from beyond the arc in the first half of the season. He was given the John Rudometkin Award for 110 percent effort at the USC Men's Basketball Awards Banquet following the season.
HIGH SCHOOL: Marquetti played at Millikan HS in Long Beach, Calif. and was named the Moore League MVP as he averaged a double-double with 22.8 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. He also averaged 2.0 blocks, 2.5 assists and 2.4 steals per game. He scored 20 points or more in 19 of his 28 games, including a season-high 37 points in a win vs. Lakewood on Jan. 24. Marquetti had a season-best 22 rebounds and scored 27 points in a win vs. Taft on Dec. 26. He also made 49.2 percent of his three-point attmepts (30-for-61) and 87.6 percent of his free throw attempts (148-for-169) as a senior. Scout.com ranked Marquetti as the No. 61 prospect in the 2014 recruiting class. Marquetti was also named to the Southern Section All-Division 1AA Team, the Long Beach Press Telegram All-Area Team and honorable mention on the MaxPreps 2013-14 California Overall All-State Team. He lifted Millikan into the CIF SS-1AA quarterfinals by scoring 14 straight points to overcome a five-point deficit with two minutes left in a 59-54 win over Rancho Verde. He then scored 17 points, including hitting two free throws with 29 seconds left, to lead them to an 86-84 win over Rancho Cucamonga. Marquetti also scored 17 points in the semifinals where Millikan fell to 76-59 Mission Viejo.
PERSONAL: Malik was born on Sept. 28, 1996 in Lynwood, Calif. His mother is Adriane Webb and he has one brother, Anthony Sanford. Malik is the nephew of former Trojan basketball player Leonel Marquetti. He lists has favorite actor as Mark Wahlberg, favorite musical artist as Kendrick Lamar and favorite movie as Transformers. Says his favorite foods are steak and shrimp. Someday would like to visit Cuba. His goal after college is to play professional basketball.
