BREAKDOWN: Jonah Mathews is a 6-3, 205-pound senior guard who is a key contributor both offensively and defensively for the Trojans. He has an excellent all-around game and is a strong shooter from the outside. He enters the 2019-20 season 26 points away from 1,000 career points.
2018-19: Mathews averaged 12.6 points and was one of two Trojans to start all 33 games. He was second on the team with 78 three-point baskets made, which tied him for the seventh-most in a single season by a Trojan. His 178 career three-pointers made ranks eighth on USC’s all-time list. He made at least one three-point basket in 32 of 33 games (not Feb. 9 vs. Colorado, snapping a 28-game streak) and has made at least one in 37 of his last 38 games. Mathews led USC in minutes played with 1,096. He was 20th in scoring average and 10th in three-point percentage (39.2) among Pac-12 players. He scored a season-high 21 points vs. Missouri State on Nov. 20. He scored 20 points in the double-overtime loss at Santa Clara on Dec. 18. He also scored 20 points at Washington State on Feb. 2 by making 6 of 7 three-point attempts.
2017-18: Mathews played in 34 games, making 23 starts, and averaged 9.3 points and 2.6 rebounds. He was second on the team with 58 3-pointers made and his 42.3 shooting percentage from beyond the arc led USC and was sixth among Pac-12 players. Six times he made four or more 3-pointers in a game. He scored in double figures 13 times, scoring a career-high 27 in the Pac-12 Tournament semifinal win over Oregon...he made a career-best seven 3-pointers in that game and was named to the All-Pac-12 Tournament Team. He also scored 20 points vs. Oregon on Feb. 15. Mathews grabbed a career-best seven rebounds and scored 18 points vs. Lehigh on Nov. 22. He started the first nine games before being sidelined with an ankle injury which caused him to miss two of the next three games. He returned to the starting lineup for good the final 10 games of the season and averaged 9.8 points, scoring 10 or more points in four of those games.
2016-17: Mathews played in 35 games, including three starts, and averaged 7.0 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Finished the season fourth on the team in three-pointers made (42), third in steals (31) and sixth in minutes played (715). Played in the opener vs. Montana on Nov. 11 and tied for the team lead with three assists and grabbed three rebounds in 16 minutes off the bench. Scored his first four points, had three rebounds and two steals vs. Omaha on Nov. 13. Totaled 14 points (7 of 10 from the free throw line) vs. SMU on Nov. 25. Scored a season-high 26 points with five three-pointers made (5 of 8) and five rebounds. vs. Wyoming on Dec. 23 in Las Vegas Classic title game....also a career-high six steals in the game.  Started his first game on Jan. 22 vs. Arizona State and had 14 points and three steals. Scored 18 points and grabbed a season-best six rebounds at Washington State on Feb. 4. Was accidentally kicked in the head after a pump fake vs. Washington State on March 1...sat out next game vs. Washington on March 4 with concussion-like symptoms. Returned to action the next game vs. Washington in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament on March 8. Scored 11 points vs. UCLA in the Pac-12 Quarterfinals on March 9. Scored 7 points on 2-for-2 shooting from three-point range in USC’s First Four win over Providence on March 15.
HIGH SCHOOL: Mathews graduated from Santa Monica High in 2016 and served as the Vikings’ team captain, leading them in scoring with a 24.1 points per game and averaging 8.4 rebounds and 6.2 assists. He scored 41 points in the season-opener and never looked back leading the Vikings to a 30-3 record which included a 25-game winning streak. That streak was snapped in a 64-60 loss to George Washington Prep in the California state Division II playoff game on March 9. Santa Monica defeated Temecula Valley 66-60 in the CIF Southern Section 1A title game on March 5, as Mathews scored 33 points in the come-from-behind victory. He also earned a title as a freshman when his older brother Jordan (California/Gonzaga) led Santa Monica to the 2013 championships. Mathews was named the 2016 CIF Southern Section Division 1A Player of the Year. He was also named to the L.A. Times All-Area Team and honorable mention on the MaxPreps All-State team. Mathews was ranked the No. 79 recruit in his class by ESPN. He was also ranked the No. 62 overall prospect and the No. 1 shooting guard in the West by Scout.com. Mathews was team MVP three times and left as Santa Monica High’s all-time leading scorer.
PERSONAL: Jonah was born on Feb. 10, 1998 in San Francisco, Calif. His parents are Philip and Margie and he has three siblings, Jordan, Sabrina and Akilah. It is a basketball family as his father Phil is currently the head coach at Riverside Community College and his older brother, Jordan, played for Gonzaga in the 2017 NCAA Championships game after beginning his career at California. Likes reading, playing video games and hanging out with friends in his spare time. Says Allen Iverson is his sports hero because he was small, but had a big heart. Lists Lil Uzi Vert, Biggie Smalls, Kendrick Lamar, Drake and J. Cole as his favorite musical artists. His favorite foods are chicken, spaghetti and pizza. Would like to travel to Fiji some day. After a career in the NBA, he would like to be a sports commentator on ESPN. Mathews is a Communications major at USC.
