Michael Musselman is in his first season as an assistant coach at USC, after five successful seasons at Arkansas. He wore many hats in his five seasons with the Razorbacks, serving as an assistant coach during the 2023-24 season. He was initially hired at Arkansas as director of recruiting before the 2019-20 season, added the title of assistant director of basketball operations for the 2020-21 season and was promoted to director of basketball operations for the 2022-23 season. He was elevated to an assistant coach position prior to last season. Throughout his tenure, Musselman spearheaded the Arkansas men’s basketball recruiting efforts.
In 2022, Musselman helped Arkansas land the No.2-ranked recruiting class in the country, with three five-star athletes and six of its players ranking within the top 100 in the country. Musselman brought in multiple top recruits during his tenure at Arkansas including four McDonald’s All-Americans. Among the prospects recruited under Musselman and the Arkansas staff are Nick Smith Jr., Jordan Walsh, and Anthony Black, all of whom were selected within the top 40 of the 2023 NBA draft. Arkansas was one of two college programs to have three players selected in the 2023 NBA Draft and the only one with two or more players selected in the top 40.
Â
The first recruiting class at Arkansas was the class of 2020 which was ranked No. 5 in the nation by ESPN.com. The class featured top 40 prospects Moses Moody and Khalen Robinson and a pair of four-star recruits in Davonte Davis and Jaylin Williams, co-Arkansas HS Players of the Year. He also helped Arkansas land three top graduate transfers to begin Arkansas’ dominance of the transfer portal. Moody went on to earn SEC Freshman of the Year, first-team All-SEC and All-America honors. Moody was selected with the No. 14 pick by the Golden State Warriors in the 2021 NBA Draft, becoming Arkansas’ first “one-and-done player.”
Â
In 2021-22, Musselman helped Arkansas bring in four transfers which played key roles in the Razorbacks reaching their second straight Elite 8 and a No. 8 final ranking in the Coaches Poll. During his time at Arkansas, he helped propel the Razorbacks to levels they had not reached in 25 years, making back-to-back Elite 8 appearances, a Sweet 16 run and winning 20 or more games four times.
Â
In addition to his growth while with the Razorbacks, Musselman also served on the staff for the Cleveland Cavaliers 2023 NBA summer league team, who won the NBA Summer League championship.
Â
Prior to Arkansas, Musselman spent the 2018-19 season as a graduate assistant at Nevada, helping the team win 29 games, a Mountain West Championship and earn an NCAA Tournament berth. He previously served as a student manager at his alma mater, the University of San Diego. In his four years with the Toreros, he assisted the team in practice sessions, scouting reports, film editing and statistical analysis.Â
Musselman continues the coaching legacy that was started by his grandfather, Bill Musselman and continued on by his father and USC head coach Eric Musselman. Michael received his bachelor’s degree in communications and a minor in business administration from San Diego in 2018. He completed his master’s degree in educational leadership from Nevada in the summer of 2019.
