Fangupo, who was off to a promising start in 2009 before getting injured, will battle for playing time at defensive tackle as a junior in 2010. He[apos]ll likely miss 2010 spring drills while recovering from a 2009 ankle injury.
2009:
Fangupo, who transferred to USC in the fall of 2009 from a junior college, was a backup defensive tackle as a junior in 2009. But he broke his left ankle against Washington State and was sidelined for USC[apos]s last 9 games. Overall in 2009 while appearing in 3 games (San Jose State, Washington, Washington State), he made 2 tackles, with 0.5 for a loss. He had 1 tackle against San Jose State and 1 (with 0.5 for a loss) against Washington State. Because of the early-season injury, he was allowed to redshirt.
JUNIOR COLLEGE:
His 2008 honors included Super Prep JUCO 100 and All-Central Conference second team as a sophomore defensive tackle at Mt. San Antonio Junior College in Walnut (Calif.). He had 47 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss, 6 sacks, 1 deflection, 2 fumble recoveries and 2 forced fumbles in 2008. Mt. San Antonio played in its second consecutive state championship game in 2008.
As a freshman in 2007, he made All-Mission Conference first team while making 24 tackles and 2 sacks as Mt. San Antonio played in the state championship game. Fellow Trojan Jacob Harfman also attended Mt. San Antonio.
HIGH SCHOOL:
He prepped at Century High in Santa Ana (Calif.), where he made the 2003 All-CIF Division IX first team as a senior. He then went on a Mormon mission.
PERSONAL:
He[apos]s a sociology major at USC with a B- average (2.81 GPA). He spent part of his youth in Tonga. His nickname is 'Loni' (pronounced LOW-nee).
HEBRON FANGUPO ON: Coming to USC: '(When visiting a USC practice while in junior college) I went up to (then defensive coordinator) Nick Holt and I told him that when (future NFL defensive lineman) Fili Moala leaves, I want to be the one to come in and replace him. I think he thought I was joking. He just laughed and walked away, but I grabbed him by the arm and looked him in the eye and said, [apos]I really want to play here and I know I can play here.[apos]' His persona: 'I don[apos]t know what I am. I[apos]m new. I[apos]m old. But I[apos]m also still a little young buck because everything is new to me. But then again, there[apos]s a lot of people here I share experiences with.'
WHAT OTHERS SAY: USC defensive end Wes Horton: 'He[apos]s a big, solid guy. He[apos]s huge, so once he starts really coming after guys physically, no one will be able to block him. He[apos]s still young in the system and he[apos]s definitely going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future.'
