Biography

CAREER:  In his 5-year collegiate career (3 years at Ohio State, 2 years at USC), he has 169 tackles, including 4 for loss (with 0.5 sack), 9 pass breakups, 2 INTs, 2 fumble recoveries while appearing in 48 games (with 20 starts)

2024: Shaw, an experienced member of the USC secondary, will return to make an impact at safety as a redshirt senior in 2024.

2023: Shaw recorded 57 tackles (fourth on the team), including 2.5 for loss (with 0.5 sack) a 1 pass breakup as a redshirt senior in 2023 while appearing in all 13 games and starting 3 times (Colorado, Utah and Washington).

He tallied 2 tackles against San Jose State and 3 tackles versus Nevada. He had 5 tackles against Stanford and 6 tackles versus Arizona State. He collected 6 tackles, including 1 for loss of 3 yards, versus Colorado. He had 3 tackles against Arizona and 4 tackles versus Notre Dame. He recorded 6 tackles against Utah and a season-high 10 tackles and 1 pass breakup versus California. He recorded 4 tackles against Washington and 3 tackles, including 1 for loss of 1 yard, versus UCLA. He had 5 tackles, including 0.5 for loss of 3 yards (with 0.5 sack for minus 3 yards) in the Holiday Bowl against Louisville.

2022:  Shaw recorded 50 tackles (fifth on the team), including 1 for loss, plus 4 pass breakups, 1 INT and 1 fumble recovery while appearing in all 14 games and starting 5 times (California, Colorado, UCLA, Notre Dame, and the Pac-12 Championship versus Utah). 

He tallied 2 tackles against both Oregon State and Washington State, and decorated his stat sheet versus Arizona where he had 7 tackles, including 1 for loss of 3 yards, 1 interception and 1 pass breakup. He was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after his performance at Arizona. He led the team in tackles versus Cal with 11 and had 1 pass breakup, and then recorded 4 tackles against Colorado. He had 8 tackles against UCLA and 6 tackles against Notre Dame. In the Pac-12 Championship game versus Utah, he notched 5 tackles, 2 pass breakups and 1 fumble recovery. He collected 5 tackles in the Cotton Bowl against Tulane. 

OHIO STATE:  He posted 59 tackles (3rd on the team), including 0.5 for a loss, plus 3 deflections, an interception and a fumble recovery while appearing in all 13 games (and starting 12 times, all but the Minnesota opener) at safety as a redshirt sophomore in 2020.  He had a career-best 9 tackles against Utah in the Rose Bowl (with the fumble recovery), 8 versus Purdue and 6 versus Michigan (with the interception, at the goal line).  

As a redshirt freshman in 2020, he made 1 tackle and 1 deflection while appearing as a backup in 5 games (Nebraska, Penn State, Rutgers, Michigan State and Alabama in the CFP Championship Game).

He played in 3 games (Miami Ohio, Maryland, Rutgers) as a first-year freshman reserve, getting 2 tackles, and was able to redshirt.

HIGH SCHOOL:  He was the 2018 Interstate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior safety and wide receiver at The Bullis School in Potomac (Md.).  In 2018, he had 21 tackles, including 1.5 for losses, and a deflection on defense, ran for 257 yards on 37 carries (6.9 avg) with 3 TDs and caught 4 passes for 52 yards (13.0 avg) with a TD on offense and returned 6 kickoffs for 111 yards (18.5 avg) and 3 punts for 2 yards (0.7 avg).

As a 2017 junior, he made 30 tackles, including 2 for losses, plus 3 interceptions, 2 deflections, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery for a TD on defense, caught 27 passes for 473 yards (17.5 avg) with 5 TDs and ran for 198 yards on 39 carries (5.1 avg) with a TD on offense and returned 10 kickoffs for 182 yards (18.2 avg) with a TD and 4 punts for 17 yards (4.3 avg).

As a 2016 sophomore, he had 21 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, and an interception return for a TD on defense, ran for 106 yards on 10 carries (10.6 avg), caught 2 passes for 24 yards (12.0 avg) and completed 2-of-4 passes (50.0%) for 49 yards with a TD on offense and had 5 kickoff returns for 91 yards (18.2 avg).

He also was an All-American lacrosse player at Bullis, helping his team win the 2019 national tournament.

PERSONAL:  He earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from USC. He is now pursuing a certificate in Gerontology. He was a 2-time (2020-21) Academic All-Big Ten honoree and a 3-time (2019-21) OSU Scholar-Athlete while at Ohio State.
