Outside hitter Dillon Klein had 20 kills and finished with 24.5 points in a win over the Cardinal

LOS ANGELES – The fourth-ranked USC men's volleyball team (16-3, 8-2 MPSF) won its eighth straight match in a four-set decision (25-21, 23-25, 25-16, 25-17) over 14th-ranked Stanford (9-12, 6-4) at Galen Center on Saturday, April 4.

KEY PLAYERS

Sr. OH Dillon Klein led all players with 24.5 points with 20 kills (2e, 27att) and .667 hitting. He also had four blocks (one solo), two service aces, and finished with nine digs and an assist. It was his 77th-career match in double-digit kills in 96 contests and was the 13th time he has had 20 or more kills in a match.
Jr. S Caleb Blanchette dished out 41 assists and had 11 digs to record his third double-double of the season and the eighth of his career. The Trojans hit .354 for their 16th match north of the .300 mark.
Jr. MB Thiago Zamprogno had eight kills (0e) on nine attacks to hit .889 in just two and a half sets of action.
So. MB Parker Tomkinson totaled 10.0 points with seven kills (1e, 10att, .600) and six blocks.
So. OH Sterling Foley scored eight kills and had three blocks, four assists, and a pair of digs.
Fr. OPP Cooper Keane reached 10.0 points earned on seven kills, two service aces, and two blocks.
For the Cardinal, Moses Wagner had 14 kills and Alex Rottman added 11. Nate Clinton had eight kills without an error and hit .500 on 16 attacks. Clinton also led Stanford with seven digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

USC out-hit Stanford, .354 to .236, and logged its 16th match over .300 hitting and the Trojans' ninth time north of .350. The Trojans totaled more kills (52-42), assists (48-39), digs (32-21), and service aces (5-2) than the Cardinal.
The Trojans pulled out a 25-21 win to claim their 22nd consecutive set victory despite having a hard-charging Cardinal on their heels nearly the entire way. Stanford put up five blocks to account for five of the seven Trojan hitting errors. USC hit .167 (11k) on 24 attacks but still outpaced the Cardinal's .080 effort with seven kills (5e) on 25 swings. The Trojans put up four blocks and out-dug Stanford, 10-5. Klein and Foley each scored three kills in the first set to pace the USC attack.
USC trailed by as many as nine points in the second set but closed to within a point several times before Stanford snapped the 22-set win streak with a 25-23 win. Klein was unconscionable with 10 kills on 10 attacks and led the Trojans in floor defense with four digs. The Trojans used an 11-4 run to close within a point at 23-22 and saved one set point on a third kill from Zamprogno, but it wasn't enough to stop the Cardinal. USC may have started slow, but hit .273 with 16 kills (7e) on 33 attacks to stay afoot with Stanford's .294 effort (15k, 5e) on 34 swings.
The Trojans led wire-to-wire to take a 25-16 win in the third for a 2-1 lead in the match. USC hit .500 with 12 kills (2e) on 20 attacks over Stanford's .222 (10k, 4e) on 27 swings. Klein added four kills with a service ace and a solo block to total 6.0 points while Tomkinson racked three kills. Blanchette dished out 10 assists and was all over the floor to lead the way with six digs. The Trojans led by as many as 10 during a run where Andrew Chapin registered his first-career service ace.
The fourth set had nine ties and a pair of lead changes, but the Trojans pulled away at the end to close out the win with a 25-17 result. USC slotted 13 kills (2e) on 19 attempts to hit .579 and kept up the service pressure to record a pair of aces. Stanford had 10 kills (3e) on 20 swings to hit .350 but committed seven service errors to go with the two reception errors. Keane, Klein, and Zamprogno tallied three kills apiece while Foley and Tomkinson had two kills each.

UP NEXT

USC leaves the state of California for the first time this spring for a pair of matches at 10th-ranked BYU (19-8, 6-4 MPSF). The teams will meet at Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah, for a 7 p.m. MT (6 p.m. PT) match on Friday (April 10) that will be shown on B1G+ and on byu.tv. The teams then meet for a rematch on Saturday (April 11) at 8 p.m. MT (7 p.m. PT) that will be shown live nationally on Big Ten Network.

MATCH NOTES

USC improved to 75-41 all-time against Stanford and has won three straight matches against the Cardinal.
The Trojans moved to 13-2 at Galen Center this spring with just one home match left on the regular-season schedule.
USC's set one win set a new school record for consecutive sets won (22) and broke the old record of 21 set in 1991.
USC's eighth straight win matches the season's longest win streak; 8-0 to start the season.
The Trojans hit better than .300 for the 16th time and were north of .350 for the ninth time this spring.
