Trojans seek revenge at home against rival Bruins.
LOS ANGELES - No. 14 USC women's tennis returns home this Friday for one of its biggest matches of the season, hosting crosstown rival No. 17 UCLA at Marks Tennis Stadium. First serve at 2 p.m. in Los Angeles sets the stage for another chapter in a rivalry that has recently tilted in UCLA's favor, with the Bruins winning eight of the last 10 meetings, including a 6-1 decision earlier this season in Westwood.
USC (12-5) enters the matchup looking to bounce back from a narrow 4-3 loss to Michigan, a contest that showcased the Trojans' depth despite the result. The Women of Troy boast a strong lineup led by No. 24 Jana Hossam and No. 50 Emma Charney, while freshman No. 114 Eugenia Zozaya leads the Trojans in singles wins this season at 25. Doubles has been a particular strength for USC, with three ranked pairs, highlighted by the No. 19 duo of Dani Borruel and Lily Fairclough, giving the Trojans an edge in the opening point. Fairclough is also ranked in doubles with Hossam and Krisha Mahendran.Â
UCLA (9-5) arrives with momentum after a 4-1 win over Michigan State and brings a formidable singles lineup anchored by No. 11 Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer. The Bruins also feature ranked players Mayu Crossley and Bianca Fernandez, along with the No. 33 doubles team of Olivia Center and Kate Fakih.Â
Friday's matchup not only carries rivalry implications but also conference positioning as the season heats up. With both teams nationally ranked and evenly matched on paper, the doubles point and key singles matchups could prove decisive. Fans attending the match can also enjoy free pizza, with the first 50 spectators receiving a "Victory is our Tradition" t-shirt as USC looks to defend its home court and flip the script against its rival.
