Trojans drop doubles point but rally with four singles wins to take down Bruins.
LOS ANGELES - No. 14 USC women's tennis turned the tables in rivalry fashion on Friday, defeating No. 17 UCLA 4-2 at Marks Tennis Stadium, just one month after falling to the Bruins on their home courts.
The comeback win marks USC's second top-20 victory at Marks Tennis Stadium this month, having downed No. 2 Ohio State just a few weeks back. With the win, USC improves to 13-5 overall and 6-1 in Big Ten Conference play.Â
The Trojans showed resilience from the outset despite dropping the doubles point. UCLA claimed the early 1-0 lead, but USC quickly regrouped in singles play, where the Women of Troy delivered four wins to secure the comeback victory.
UCLA extended its advantage to 2-0 with a straight-set win on court 2 in singles play, putting early pressure on the Women of Troy. From there, however, USC took control of the match.
No. 50 ranks Emma Charney got the Trojans on the board with a dominant turnaround on court 4, dropping the first set before overwhelming No. 119 Bianca Fernandez 4-6, 6-0, 6-0 to make it 2-1. Moments later, No. 24 Jana Hossam delivered a key ranked victory on center court, defeating No. 11 Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer 6-4, 6-3 to level the score at 2-2.
With momentum firmly on USC's side, freshman Dani Borruel put the Trojans within striking distance of the clinch, earning a 6-1, 6-4 win on court 6 to give USC its first lead of the day at 3-2.
The deciding point came from freshman No. 114 Eugenia Zozaya on court 3, who battled back after dropping the opening set to defeat Kate Fakih 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 and officially clinch the 4-2 victory for USC.
