PALM CITY, Fla. — Led by sophomore Jaden Dumdumaya tying the third-best round in program history, the No. 24 USC Men's Golf team sits in 10th place out of 16 teams after two rounds of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston at the Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla. on Monday, March 23.
In one of the most competitive tournaments in collegiate golf, the Trojans broke into the top 10 during the second round before finishing in 10th with a 558 (-10). No. 1 Auburn leads the way with a 538 (-30), while No. 10 Texas Tech, No. 6 Texas, Florida State and No. 7 Arkansas round out the top five. Individually, sophomore Jaden Dumdumaya is tied for first with Florida State's Tyler Weaver with 131s (-11).
Taking the lead early in the first round, Dumdumaya had eight birdies and no bogeys in his first-round 63 (-8). The sophomore started strong with four birdies in the first six holes, then had two birdies on the front side to maintain his lead. With the rest of the field surging, Dumdumaya finished with birdies on two of his final three holes to wrap up the third-best round in program history.
This is the second 63 of Dumdumaya's career. Earlier this season, he fired a 63 (-9) to tie the second-best round in program history.
In his second round, Dumdumaya had two birdies on the front side before having his first and only bogey of the day on the par-5 No. 5. Sophomore Jack Buchanan is tied for 25th with a 138 (-4) and is the only other Trojan to finish below par. Buchanan fired a 68 (-3) in the first round with three birdies and no bogeys, then carried positive momentum into the second round by having three birdies in the first four holes. However, Buchanan ran into trouble with a bogey on the par-4 No. 18 before making the turn and having his second bogey of the day on the par-3 No. 3.
Senior Antonio Safa bounced back from a 75 (+4) in the first round by firing a 69 (-2) to wrap up the day in a tie for 57th with a 144 (+2). Safa ran into trouble in his second round with a double-bogey and a bogey on Nos. 13 and 14 before finishing the front side with two birdies. Safa fared much better on the front side with just one bogey and three birdies to push his score under par. All told, Safa moved up 17 places in the second round.
