No. 20 USC Women's Tennis Falls to No. 14 UVA During ITA Kickoff Weekend

Trojans drop first match of the season to Cavaliers.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – No. 20 USC women's tennis came up short in the championship match of ITA Kickoff Weekend, dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 14 Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Cavaliers secured the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. Ninth-ranked Melodie Collard and Vivian Yang opened the scoring with a 6-1 victory over No. 6 Lily Fairclough and Daniela Borruel on center court, followed by a 6-1 decision from No. 10 Annabelle Xu and Martina Genis Salas against Jana Hossam and Krisha Mahendran on court two.
The Trojans struggled to find momentum in individual play, as Virginia picked up three straight singles wins. Katie Rolls delivered the first singles point with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lily Fairclough on court six. No. 125 Isabelle Lacy followed on court four, edging No. 62 ranked Eugenia Menendez in a pair of tight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (8-6), to push the Cavaliers ahead 3-0.
The match was decided on center court, where No. 30 Vivian Yang outlasted No. 12 Emma Charney in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, to secure the clinch.
Three additional singles matches were left unfinished, including ranked matchups on courts two and three, as well as a tight contest on court five.
USC concluded ITA Kickoff Weekend as the runner-up and now returns to California for a battle against Stanford on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 1:30 p.m. PT.Â
