No. 20 USC Women’s Tennis Upsets No. 11 Stanford, 4-3, in Palo Alto

PALO ALTO, Calif. — No. 20 USC women's tennis earned a statement road victory on Friday afternoon, knocking off No. 11 Stanford, 4-3, at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The Trojans secured the doubles point and clinched the dual late in singles play to hand the Cardinal their first home loss of the season.
USC set the tone early by capturing the doubles point. The Trojans struck first on court three, where Emma Charney and Eugenia Zozaya rolled past Sein Myoung and Emma Sun, 6-2. Lily Fairclough and Jana Hossam followed with a 6-3 win over Caroline Driscoll and Monika Ekstrand on center court to clinch the early point.
USC freshman No. 62 Eugenia Zozaya delivered USC's first singles win of the day, defeating Stanford's Tianmei Wang in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, on court four. The Cardinal answered soon after, as No. 67 Monika Ekstrand defeated No. 16 Jana Hossam, 7-5, 6-1, at the top spot.
Stanford briefly tied things up when Sein Myoung earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 74 Krisha Mahendran on court five. USC bounced back immediately, inching ahead at 3-2 behind Dani Borruel's composed 6-4, 6-3 win against Emma Sun on court six.
The Cardinal once again evened the match after No. 18 Alyssa Ahn outlasted No. 12 Charney in a three-set battle, 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-1, on court two, setting the stage for a dramatic finish.
With the dual hanging in the balance, Immi Haddad delivered the decisive point for the Trojans on court three. No. 95 Haddad rallied past No. 77 Caroline Driscoll in a hard-fought three-setter, 6-7(5), 6-2, 7-5, sealing the 4-3 upset for USC.
The victory marks a marquee win for the Trojans as they continue Bay Area play tomorrow against No. 16 Cal at 1:30 p.m. PT.
