Trojans shutout UC San Diego Tritons 7-0.
LOS ANGELES - No. 19 USC men's tennis opened the season on a high note as the Trojans shutout San Diego State and UC San Diego on Sunday, Jan. 11 at Marks Tennis Stadium. Troy powered past the Aztecs 4-0 before returning to the courts to sweep the Tritons 7-0 in the afternoon.
The Trojans won the doubles point against both San Diego State and UC San Diego, debuting an almost entirely new lineup that includes six newcomers this year.
Against San Diego State, USC got off to a hot start and never looked back, winning the doubles point and three straight-set singles matches to record the season-opening win. USC returners impressed in doubles play as sophomores Connor Church and Nathan Trouve teamed up to take down SDSU's William Kleege and Denis Maijorov 6-2 on court two. Troy's new pairing of Branko Djuric and Max Exsted solidified the doubles point with a 6-1 win over the Aztec pair of Aleski Lofman and Brock Anderson on court three.
Moving into singles play with a one-point lead, the Trojans won first sets on five courts. Freshman Max Exsted was first to extend USC's lead, downing SDSU's Lars Johann 6-2, 6-1 on court four. Returner Trouve got to work with Aztec Imran Daniel Hazli, coming out on top with another 6-2, 6-1 scoreline. Newcomer Andrin Casanova delivered the clincher on court six as the Trojan beat San Diego State's Brock Anderson 7-5(5), 6-2 to seal the win for USC.
The Trojans returned to the courts in the afternoon to take down UC San Diego 7-0 as USC won the doubles point and all six singles matches to sweep the Tritons. Shaking up the doubles lineup, USC still found success, with Exsted and Trouve partnering to take down UCSD's Chunduru/Pellouchoud 6-2 on court two. Casanova and Jack McCarthy followed it up with a 6-4 center court win over the Triton pairing of Abhinav Chudnuru and Trevor Nguyen. With the doubles point secured, the Trojans advanced to singles play with a one-point lead.
All six of USC's singles players won their matches against UC San Diego in the afternoon, as Casanova delivered his second clinch of the day. The newcomer took down Abhinav Chudnuru 6-2, 6-2 to secure the win over UCSD and give the remaining matches momentum to complete the sweep. Freshmen Pablo Robledo Hoyas, Branko Djuric and Exsted also recorded wins during the afternoon match, along with victories form returners Niels Hoffmann and Connor Church.
