No. 16 USC Women's Volleyball Falls to No. 19 BYU

LOS ANGELES – The 16th-ranked USC women's volleyball team (5-1) took its first loss in a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-23, 25-23) to No. 19 BYU (7-0) in the LMU Invitational at Gersten Pavilion on Thursday, Sept. 11.

- RS So. OH London Wijay shared team-high honors with 11 kills (2e, 28att) with .321 hitting and had eight digs and a block.
- RS Fr. OH Brooklyn Tealer also had 11 kills (4e) on 23 swings and hit .304 with three blocks and a dig.
- Fr. OPP Abigail Mullen recorded eight kills to go with five digs and a block.
- Fr. S Reese Messer put up 36 assists and added six digs, two blocks, and a kill.
- Fr. LIB Taylor Deckert delivered 11 digs and had four assists.
- RS So. MB Leah Ford had seven kills (2e, 14att, .357) and led the Trojans with five blocks.
- For the Cougars, Suli Davis led the way with 15 kills and 10 digs for the double-double. She also had two of BYU's three service aces. Claire Little Chambers added 12 kills and had six digs. Alex Bower totaled 33 assists, six digs, and three kills. Emma Barbero led all players with 13 digs and added four assists.
- McGinest scored the Trojans' first two kills, but Davis had racked up five kills through 11 rallies to put the Cougars on top, 8-3. BYU collected 19 kills and hit .371 (6e, 35att) despite surrendering five points to USC blocks and took set one, 25-19. Wijay led the way with four kills, but USC totaled 11 (3e) on 30 swings to hit .267.
- BYU used a 4-0 run to close out a comeback 25-23 win in set two. USC had 17 kills but committed an accumulation of errors (10) on 41 attacks to register a .171 hitting rate in the frame. The Cougars had five blocks this time, but the Trojans out-dug BYU, 15-12, with Wijay under five Cougar attacks. USC led by as many as three points twice but set two was tied 11 times and had six lead changes, the last of which proved to be the costliest for the Women of Troy.
- USC led the Cougars by four as late as 18-14 in the third set, but BYU stormed back to tie the score for a seventh time at 19-all before finishing off a 25-23 win for the sweep. Wijay, Mullen, and Tealer each scored four kills apiece and had the Trojans hitting .306 with 15 kills (4e) on 36 attacks. The Cougars also had 15 kills (5) on 31 swings to hit .323.Â
- USC returns to Gersten Pavilion to conclude the LMU Invitational on Friday (Sept. 12) with a 3:30 p.m. PT match against Western Michigan (1-6). The match will not be streamed/broadcast.
- USC fell to 12-7 all-time against BYU and lost its second straight match to the Cougars.
- The Trojans had a five-match win streak snapped, the team's longest since a six-match win streak last season.
