May 08, 2025 | Men's Tennis
The Trojans face the Bruins for the third time this season, as USC is 2-0 against UCLA
LOS ANGELES – The stakes have never been higher for USC men's tennis (16-10) as it returns to the NCAA tournament Super Regionals against No. 16 UCLA (18-8) at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 9 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center (Westwood).
The Trojans stormed into the round of 16 after an upset of No. 7 San Diego this past weekend, downing the regional hosts in San Diego 4-2. This will be USC's first time in the round of 16 since the 2022-23 season, where No. 7 Michigan eliminated them in the super regional round.
NCAA SUPER REGIONAL INFO
Los Angeles, Calif. | Los Angeles Tennis Center
(Friday, May 9) 2 p.m. PT – No. 16 UCLA (18-8) vs. USC (16-10)
RANKINGS
USC will be led on center court by No. 16 senior Peter Makk, who reached a career-high ranking heading into the postseason. Makk is currently on a six-match win streak, with all the match victories coming against ranked opponents. Freshman Nathan Trouve reentered the rankings after dropping out in February, sitting at No. 88. Trouve earned his ranking after besting Michigan State's then-No. 13 Ozan Baris in the Big Ten Tournament. Trouve is currently on a three-match win streak with two ranked wins in that span.
CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES
With a pair of first and second-round victories under their belts, the Trojans have returned to the round of 16 for the first time since the 2022-23 season. They will be looking for a third-straight victory over their crosstown rivals to return to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time since 2021.
This is the lone matchup on any side of the bracket that will feature two unseeded teams.
FIRST AND SECOND ROUND RECAP
USC opened the NCAA tournament last Saturday with a dominant 4-0 sweep of Arizona State in their first-round match-up in San Diego. The Trojans made quick work in doubles against the Sun Devils and followed by locking down courts two (Trouve), four (senior Karl Lee) and six (freshman Matteo Morazzi) to secure the match.
In the second round, USC upset host No. 7 San Diego after falling behind early. The Toreros secured the match's doubles point, and a loss on court four put USC in an early 2-0 hole. However, after a five-hour delay, strong play from Lee gave USC its first point of the match and turned the tide, with courts two (Trouve), three (junior Oscar Weightman) and six (Morazzi) all following suit to complete the upset.
SCOUTING UCLA
The Trojans are 2-0 against crosstown rival UCLA this season, defeating the Bruins once during non-conference play in Westwood and once during Big Ten competition at home. However, the Bruins have excelled as of late: they enter Friday's match-up riding a ten-game win streak, including a victory over No. 6 Ohio State to secure the Big Ten tournament title.
UCLA cruised through the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament, downing UC Santa Barbara 4-0 in the first round and upsetting No. 11 Berkeley 4-2 on the road. The Bruins have several ranked singles players, including the recently returned No. 35 Spencer Johnson. Johnson is joined by No. 20 Rudy Quan, No. 110 Emon Van Loben Sels and No. 116 Aadarsh Tripathi in the rankings. The Bruins have just one ranked doubles pairing in No. 44 Tripathi and Alexander Hoogmartens.
