USC Baseball Advances to Regional Final With 6-4 Win Over Saint Mary's
May 31, 2025 | Baseball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Ethan Hedges homered twice and the USC baseball team erased an early deficit as the Trojans outdueled Saint Mary's, 6-4, on Saturday night to remain in the winners' bracket and advance to the Corvallis Regional final.
USC will face the winner of tomorrow's Oregon State vs. Saint Mary's game at 7 p.m. with a win sending the Trojans through to the Super Regionals. Either Oregon State or Saint Mary's would have to beat USC twice to advance.
With the Trojans down 3-1, Augie Lopez hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game and Hedges put USC in front for good with a solo home run in the fifth.
The Trojans would add a crucial run in the sixth, with Richard Tejeda making it a 5-3 game with a two-out single to score Abbrie Covarrubias, who stole both second and third in the inning. Saint Mary's again cut it to a one-run game with a run in the eighth, but USC came right back in the bottom half of the inning getting an RBI single from Maximo Martinez.
Mason Edward worked into the sixth inning, giving up three runs on six hits while walking none and striking out six batters. He left with one out in the inning, giving way to Brodie Purcell with the Trojans up by one. Purcell gave up a single, but then got a double-play ball to third to end the inning and keep USC in front.
After the Gaels cut it back to a one-run game, Caden Hunter took over on the mound with two outs and a runner on third, getting a strikeout to end the threat. Hunter picked up the save with a scoreless ninth, setting the side down in order with a strikeout and two groundouts.
Hedges hit the first of his two homers in the first inning to give the Trojans the early lead, but the Gaels answered with a two-run shot of their own in the top of the second. Saint Mary's would plate a third run in the fourth to go ahead 3-1 before USC made its comeback. It was the Hedges' second two home run game of the year as he now has 14 long balls on the season.
USC improves to 37-21 with the victory, while Saint Mary's falls to 36-25.
