Trojans Seal Sweep of Ohio State With 10-9 Walkoff Win
April 06, 2025 | Baseball
The win seals a three-game sweep of the Buckeyes as USC improves to 20-11 overall on the season and 9-6 in Big Ten play. Ohio State falls to 8-20, 2-10.
For the second game in a row, the teams traded the lead back and forth all afternoon, with Ohio State taking a 9-8 advantage thanks to five runs in the sixth inning.
Andrew Harbour took the mound for USC with the bases loaded in the seventh and got a strikeout and groundout to end the threat and keep the Trojans within one run. Harbour would toss two scoreless innings from there, facing just one above the minimum and striking out five of the seven batters he faced. Harbour struck out the side in the top of the ninth to set up the Trojans comeback in the bottom half of the inning.
After two quick outs, Dowd stepped to the plate and smashed the second pitch he saw over the right field fence. The clutch homer capped a three-hit, four-RBI day for the USC centerfielder. Ethan Hedges and Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek followed with walks, both taking their free base on 3-2 counts, and Maximo Martinez was hit by a pitch to bring up Carpentier with the bases full. On a 2-2 count, Carpentier lined a ball into right field to score Hedges and set off the celebration in the outfield.
It was the second sweep of the season and the first in Big Ten play for the Trojans.
The Trojans scored three runs in the second inning to erase an early 1-0 deficit, getting a sac fly from John Elliott and a two-run double from Dowd. After a solo-shot in the first, Ohio State's Tyler Pettorini hit a two-run homer in the third to tie it back up, 3-3.
Dowd singled home a run in the bottom of the third and Hedges drew a bases-loaded walk to make it a 5-3 USC lead. The Buckeyes would cut the deficit in half in the fourth, but Martin-Grudzielanek hit a three-run homer in the fifth to give the Trojans a four-run advantage.
Ohio State would grab their first lead since the first inning with a five-run sixth inning, getting a grand slam from Ryan Miller, but were shut down the rest of the way by Harbour.
