Ninth-Inning Rally Secures Sweep for USC Baseball

MINNEAPOLIS – The USC baseball team made a dramatic ninth-inning comeback to complete the sweep of Minnesota on Sunday afternoon, scoring two runs in the top of the final innings to win it, 3-2.
USC improves to 29-14 overall and 14-7 in Big Ten play. Minnesota falls to 20-21, 9-12. The dramatic finally closed a weekend were USC picked up its seventh straight series win, with the Trojans' third sweep of the year and sixth straight victory.
USC had been cold offensively all afternoon, trailing 2-1 heading into the ninth inning, but Andrew Lamb led off with a single to spark the rally. Augie Lopez got a one-out, pinch-hit single a batter later and then Kade Higgins followed with another clutch pinch-hit at-bat, hitting a chopper that found a hole on the left side to score Lamb. Brayden Dowd kept the hit parade going, beating out an infield single to the right side to load the bases. Ethan Hedges would drive in the go-ahead run with a grounder to the left side, scoring pinch runner Zach Schwartzberg.
Brodie Purcell picked up the win on the mound for USC, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings after taking over in the sixth. Purcell allowed just one baserunner on a walk as he struck out four batters and did not allow a hit.
The Gophers jumped in front with single runs in both the second and fourth innings before USC could get one back on an RBI single from Lamb in the sixth inning to make it a 2-1 game.
Sax Matson also had a scoreless relief outing, getting the final out of the fifth inning and the first two outs of the sixth.

The Trojans return to Southern California for the next two weeks, playing at CSUN on Tuesday and then hosting UCLA at Great Park for a three-game series starting on Friday. Tuesday's game will be broadcast on ESPN+, while all three games against the Bruins will be on B1G+.
